New record case numbers in India.  Now officially a potential cauldron of vaccine defeating variants.

India called for Open IP (along with South Africa) . . . 9 months ago.

The vaccines we have now are the product of extremely well capitalized and efficient private businesses. Incentivize them to share their tech voluntarily, but I wouldn’t mess with what got us the 10 month miracle vaccine.

how much did the government and/or publicly funded institutions contribute to their capitalization and research that led to the vaccine tech? (honestly don't know)

Even if the govt funded every aspect of the vaccine I still don’t understand why it would be a good idea

In a very real sense, drug companies don't invent crap. Publicly funded university research programs do.

There's literally nothing messing with the development process, that ship sailed months ago.  Good grief.

Take a (victory) lap, krusty.

Reposting, because isn't this incredible news? Very similar to what they saw earlier in Israel. Story in original link.

Is San Francisco on the verge of a herd immunity breakthrough? Experts are optimistic

Locally, though, it can be clearer. Over the past seven days, San Francisco, home to more than 870,000 people, recorded an average of only 26 new Covid-19 cases per day. Two-thirds of all adults in San Francisco and almost 60 percent of the greater metro area of 4.7 million have been vaccinated with at least one dose — one of the highest rates in the U.S. Its positive test rate sits at 1.2 percent.
If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

Yeah I don’t know how much money the government threw in but also don’t see why that would be a reason to tell these companies they shouldn’t own the rights to stuff they’re putting out (obviously unless you make that a part of the deal for funding).

It would be messing with the PROCESS by changing the rules of the game. Companies like Pfizer, Moderna, J&J didn’t develop the vaccines to sell at a huge profit, but they’re not going to do it as arms of the state. If they can’t protect the fruits of their labor, it removes a major incentive for doing it at all.
