How long after the Spanish Flu did mask usage permeate the US scene?  Dax?

Now maybe people will be more likely to use masks when they are ill, ehhh who am I kidding, this is America, we don't care about others.
Speaking about airplanes and caring for others: Man boards plane with COVID symptoms, goes into cardiac arrest on the plane, multiple bystanders risk their lives to perform CPR, man dies from COVID.

if anything that probably makes you feel pretty safe about flying because I guarantee you every damn day hundreds if not thousands of jackasses are flying knowing they're positive and AFAIK this hasn't caused a major outbreak.

Of course it's kinda hard to tell since people could get it literally everywhere these days.

It does seem like flying isn't any different than normal life outside of quarantine

yeah, it would require people wanting to protect others when they are sick like the asian countries. I'll probably do it. I already have a lifetime supply of the masks.
Yeah I think we’ve crossed into it not looking crazy even after COVID. I’d definitely mask up if I’m feeling a little sick and absolutely have to go out but my first line of defense would just be to stay home. Honestly having a kid at high risk for other airborne diseases we might all mask up if we’re gonna be packed in with others for some reason around cold & flu season.

Public transit not as much of a concern. Very much looking forward to not wearing a mask at the grocery store.

i had the option to get chipped next week but passed since i just had covid. will get it in the late winter/spring instead.

Same for the wife, but it probably wouldn't have mattered.  She just finished her isolation Saturday; they're vax'ing her work Covid care group this week.  Basically just means she keeps getting to make home visits for Covid Px, will probably get exclusively Covid Px.  At least we've all run through it at the same time at home now.

Airplanes less important but public transit for sure.

I'm thinking more for droplet diseases like the flu

Masks on transit and airplanes probably isn't a bad permanent idea to take from Asia.

It'll help with other diseases too.
That sounds shitty imo.

doesn't mean it's a bad idea

Exactly rusty, it's normalized now, masks are here to stay for me in certain circumstances. Before the pandemic it wasn't a big deal to see an Asian in a mask, not because all Asians wore masks, but the only people you saw in a mask was an Asian person with the rare elderly westerner. No one will flinch or feel like a social pariah when wearing a mask now, especially in an airport.

Yeah I mean, I'm not saying i'll scoff at people wearing masks in the future, and I certainly wouldn't get on a plane without a mask if i was feeling like crap.  But if i'm feeling fresh and healthy and there's no big pandemic to worry about, i'm not wearing a mask.

Maybe instead of taking for granted that a certain number of people will die from the flu every year, Americans will realize that the number of flu deaths could be smaller. I won't hold my breath.

In The Big Short, which was pre COVID19, Brad Pitt's character was wearing a mask in the airport and gave a thumb's up to some rando East Asian in a mask on the escalator. Pretty awesome.

I certainly would have flown while sick pre-covid (and did on some level). I won't afterwards.

I think pre-pandemic there was just really bad public health messaging with regards to traveling while sick and not taking sick days at work. Hopefully those change for the better.

So, we'll probably need to get a COVID shot every year just like the flu, right?  I mean, it's not going to go away because there will be a ton of people who won't get the vaccine.

Maybe going forward airlines will be less stringent on rescheduling or cancelling tickets for passengers who are ill.

Maybe the pharmaceuticals will get better with the science of flu vaccines. I'm stunned at how much more effective this quickly thrown together COVID vaccine is compared to the flu vaccine. I'm sure there's a good explanation for this but I've been forever frustrated at the effective rate of the flu vaccine each year.

Also while we're talking about the flu, can we talk about how amazingly dumb it was for the scientists who thought flu season would exacerbate how bad the COVID pandemic would be. I'm confused as to how no one thought, people are actually washing their hands, wearing masks, and not gathering, of course flu transmissions would be way down.

More people will get chipped than you think.  Tons of magas talk big but they will get tired of trying to storm past the greeter at the grocery store and the majority of stores will require your chip card.  You only get clowned on social media so many times before you quietly roll up your sleeve for the chip.

Well yeah.

I've flown sick, a lot, and I'm guessing most of you have too. Our culture does not place value on shutting it down if you have the sniffles. We do everything while sick. I attended the 2010 CBE with @Trim and other gE'ers, half dead, not knowing what the hell I was sick with. We shared a hotel room, went to the games, to the bars, ate every meal at restaurants. I was very clearly ill to everyone who encountered us, but no one gave a crap, we just kept it moving.

it was discussed pretty early in this thread how the covid protocols completely knocked out the flu in Australia's winter. The handwashing, masks, sanitizing, and distancing is way more effective for the flu than covid since the flu is in droplets and void is airborne.
