Interesting article from WaPo on the Norton, KS NH oubreak:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/10/27/kansas-nursing-home-covid-deaths/

Brave patriots refusing to bend the knee to mask tyranny:

Quote
Staff were supposed to use personal protective equipment while caring for infected patients, according to the Andbe Home’s plan. But even after multiple residents were confirmed as infected, staff members cared for them without masks, the inspectors said.

A consultant who joined a physician in visiting the facility Oct. 17 to evaluate the infected patients told inspectors she saw six staff “at various times with their masks removed.” She also saw a staff member “in a resident’s room with her mask pulled down to her chin, not wearing goggles, and sitting next to the resident.”

Many areas unscathed during earlier waves of the pandemic felt they were insulated from the pandemic, said Gianfranco Pezzino, a senior fellow at the Kansas Health Institute and health officer in Shawnee County, home to Topeka. Norton County was among more than two-thirds of Kansas counties with no coronavirus restrictions as of Oct. 15, according to a report by the institute.

that's really sad

They're going to get sued to oblivion.

meanwhile in crazy bay area parent land, this was from a discussion about how often play structures in parks (outdoor) are sanitized

They couldn’t have picked worst time to reopen the parks. Flu season is upon us, it’ll get messy. I personally am avoiding parks. I bought a swing for my kids which we hang on random trees. It’s been really fun for them.

At current pace I can't help but think that the immune system of our youngsters are going to be irreparably compromised.

The interesting thing with Sweden will be their deaths with this latest uptick in cases. I know deaths lag behind cases, but their case uptick started in September and their deaths have remained very low.

it's still odd that their deaths continually went down through June and July, and August as cases spiked in June and that they had that major death spike in April

yeah, don't know anything about it, but that case hump looks artificial.  maybe a late data dump or something.

Joco is at 302 cases/100k over the last 2 weeks.  Redline is at 250

15.8 %positive under old formula       8.6 under the new.

Does the new formula count positives/tests while the old one counted positives/number of people tested?

Yeah, if I test negative 3 times the new counts all three negative tests.  Old would have only counted once.

Why are people still dying almost 3 weeks after they were instructed to "not let COVID dominate" their lives? I can't think of a worse way to let COVID dominate your life than letting it kill you.

I think it's the right way to do it. It's a good way to show capacity, especially if you're looking a something like daily 7-day averages.

I think it's fine to count that for other purposes, but they should also only count it as 1 negative test when they are using positive test rate to determine how impacted a community currently is and what restrictions need to be put into place.

Yes.  I'm fine counting it as total number of tests to show capacity but it shouldn't be 0/3 in the positivity test %#.

If the tests are significantly independent of each other (timing wise I'd think), I don't see why the same person should matter (I guess there could be a situation where you are basically skewing the rate if a person gets tested weekly or something so now that person's behavior is over representative).
