I don’t think the people protesting cops murdering people really gaf about covid.

That's not really the point.  The point is that two weeks ago, if you crowded into a pool in the ozarks you were a "grandma killer" -- or at least someone recklessly endangering others' lives.  Yet the protests (which ostensibly would lead to the same proportional result as crowding into a pool) have pretty broad support.

It just seems odd to implicitly rationalize the potential result (killing grandma) based on the underlying cause -- unless the point is that the result of not protesting poses a greater risk than possibly spreading covid, which seems like a stretch, though logically consistent.

I understand what the point is, and I think the point is stupid. And I think anyone making a point that mentions "killing grandma" even as a clapback isn't really worth with discussing.
What makes the point stupid?  I agree the “killing grandma” rhetoric is cheap.

If the answer is that some behaviors justify the risk, then that’s a fine response to me, but that’s a pretty serious statement that might make us reassess the magnitude of the risk.

A similar terrible take
https://twitter.com/mattyglesias/status/1268382286065676290

it's disingenuous to ignore the issue of coronavirus transmission.  it's fine to maintain that the importance of the issue outweighs those concerns, and i also think it is important to recognize that the number of protestors is a very small percentage of the population and isn't likely to have any noticeable impact on national statistics.

but it's important to be intellectually honest.  there will be people, who did not themselves make the decision to protest, that will die because of the choices made by protestors.

there might actually be a net reduction in deaths, but that's getting rather far afield.

You're right, I should have said yglesias made a somewhat valid point in an incredibly stupid way.

Hard to have much confidence in it (especially given that lots of the partygoers would not be MO residents) but definitely good news there’s no spike so obvious that it HAS to be acknowledged.

how soon are people likely to show symptoms and get tested if they were first exposed there? We're 10 days out, he's working with data that is probably 8 days out. Just seems a bit suspect, hope it's accurate

CDC says symptoms are 2-14 days out.

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/symptoms-testing/symptoms.html

Anyway, no news is good news on that front.

Maybe outdoors really is much much lower risk (no super spreading even without masks).

I'm guessing we'll know that answer here pretty shortly.
Football is on then. No questions asked.

I don't doubt the spread was low there if one potentially infectious person was there. I think the folks there were relatively young so they also probably won't go to the hospital or get tested or admit they were there if they were infected and had mild symptoms

Seems more likely now imo :dunno: be tough to do it then run the risk of having like 100s of people inflected because of bathrooms or something.
I expect to see football, but I’d be pretty surprised if they had crowds. At the same time can’t really blame them if numbers keep going down between now and September.

To be fair one article is from a St Louis website and the other from a KCMO one.

KC metro last 3 days are the biggest single days of cases yet.  That doesn't seem so great.

Note there was at least one paper plant with 200 cases but still, that only accounts for 50% of the new cases over those 3 days
