Well I just finished about 45 min of reading about The Black Death pandemic.... I don’t recommend it. We are worried about a couple months of disturbance and The Black Death had hundreds of years of breakouts. Including a 4 year period that killed between 45-50% of the entire European population. :buh-bye:

Hygiene was a little different back then. They were also constantly at war and would catapult diseased corpses over city walls to spread the plague to their enemies. Not downplaying Covid-19 at all but those two aren't really in the same ballpark. The Spanish Flu is probably the best comparison we have.

Oh yeah I get it, was just reading about other pandemics. After watching that new Pandemic doc on Netflix I read up on the Spanish Flu. If you don’t remember or know about history it will repeat itself. Just crazy the massive ones we’ve had in the past when we were so less connected than we are now.

60 million Americans caught H1N1 and it killed 12,000. Somehow we weathered that storm without destroying our economy.

US death toll for COVID still under 100 (more than half of which from a cluster of nursing homes in Washington state), reported cases under 5,000 (let’s speculate 100k unreported). Meanwhile we’re plunging our country into a depression. Great work, chicken littles.

Instead of just calling you a rough ridin' idiot, let me expand a bit.

Let's just use your 60 Million number infected with 12,000 deaths.  That expands out to a .02% mortality rate.  COVID-19 has been reported to have between a 1-3% mortality rate.

If we hit the same amount of infected people that is between 600,000-1,800,000 deaths with the same amount of infected people, with no vaccine.  So while you are a giant dumbass, that really doesn't do it justice.  You are a legit rough ridin' idiot.

Oh ok - it’s been ”reported!” :runaway: Let’s take the current US numbers. Yes, 81 out of 4,500 is 1.8%. But do you really honestly believe only 4,500 have been infected? You must realize the real number of infections - the vast majority of which are so mild they will likely never be confirmed - is likely many, many times greater than that. Which is the whole freaking point.

i think ksu_w just fundamentally doesn't believe in the existence of anything beyond the us border.  except for country&culture-destroying incoming immigrants, of course.

No, there are many multitudes more than what have been reported, which makes it even worse.

You must realize the real number of infections - the vast majority of which are so mild they will likely never be confirmed - is likely many, many times greater than that.
Yeah, and guess what you rough ridin' idiot, many of those people are unknowingly spreading it. They are seeing their grandparents and interacting with MANY others who actually are in danger.

I mean it doesn't surprise me that you can self own yourself, but the extent to which you are is absolutely incredible.

what's crazy is he knows that half the deaths are in a small cluster of nursing homes in Washington but thinks it's a reason to not be concerned.

Like now he has to explain to his kids how Trump is wrong for saying we should limit all gatherings to less than 10 people and stay home if at all possible. How is he supposed to do that if it doesn’t own the libs?

A family member of mine who lives in Colorado told me he ran into a family from Kansas this past weekend in Snowmass who had just arrived for an extended vacation only to find out the slopes had been closed. They were devastated. Is it possible my relative ran into the Kdub Krew?!

i think this is the main thing.  when you can test at scale, most of society can function fairly normally.

I mean it doesn't surprise me that you can self own yourself, but the extent to which you are is absolutely incredible.

So... first you cite a “reported” death rate of 1-3%. Next you backtrack and basically agree that the death rate will in all likelihood be much much lower. And finally you concede that this death rate is highly concentrated among a certain high risk demographic. Good, so at least we’re in basic agreement on that.

So all we really disagree about is whether this is worth driving the country into a depression over. For that I would encourage you to seek some perspective. However grim, you might consider all the other hazards in life for people over 70 or with serious medical issues for which we don’t shut down businesses, lay off millions, and implode the markets.
