I have felt pretty crappy on what I would estimate was about 40% of all flights I have taken.

also, hopefully more people get flu shots post-pandemic

Maybe the pharmaceuticals will get better with the science of flu vaccines. I'm stunned at how much more effective this quickly thrown together COVID vaccine is compared to the flu vaccine. I'm sure there's a good explanation for this but I've been forever frustrated at the effective rate of the flu vaccine each year.

Also while we're talking about the flu, can we talk about how amazingly dumb it was for the scientists who thought flu season would exacerbate how bad the COVID pandemic would be. I'm confused as to how no one thought, people are actually washing their hands, wearing masks, and not gathering, of course flu transmissions would be way down.

gottlieb says that the flu mutates constantly and quickly making it hard to stay on top of. so far covid doesn't mutate much and they don't currently believe the vaccine effectiveness is different for the mutations they have seen. maybe we can smallpox this thing out of existence if we can convince enough Qannon and flat earthers to get a shot.

Just tell them it’s a flu shot and they will never know

Maybe after all of the disruption caused by COVID there will be more investment in creating a universal influenza vaccine.

I won't be leaving home to get on a plane sick, but if I get sick away from home, I would have to be very sick to miss the return flight.

People just give up flight money if they are sick? Work? Vacation? No way.

I don't know why you're acting like this but most airlines have pretty much eliminated change fees. I'm sure they'll claw to get them back but still.

And you're damn right I'll take sick days at work after 9 months of working from home and will absolutely cancel or change flights for work. I'm sure a lot of folks won't have that luxury but most people on this board will. We need mandatory paid sick leave to be the law.

Taking a sick day just means I have less vacation to use.

I don't get sick very often either though, but on those 50/50 days it definitely skews the decision.

Now yes. I thought the discussion was in the future if people are sick they are just going to not fly. I don't think that will happen.

Guess it depends on how critical it is for someone to take that flight on a specific time but I don't see work travel being cancelled because I have the sniffles.

yeah this is the type of thing that needs to change. You shouldn't need to make that choice

So you think I cancel a week long conference, giving up thousands, to not take that flight because I don't feel good that day? My company is going to be good with that?

I don't take that vacation ? Come on. We've lived 100 plus years between pandemics. I don't think this one is going to change our behaviors to this extent.

I hate this bitch so much, the very least she could have done was apologize. What pisses me off so much is that she didn't believe the conspiracy theory she spouted, it was simply an act to garner votes when she was getting smoked in the polls.

Phil, you okay? I think you're misunderstanding what people are saying about changing behaviors. I don't think anyone is saying we'll behave the same way in May 2022 as we did in May 2020.

yes I absolutely think behaviors will change on some level. Tons of people have been working from home for 9 months! That's a huge change! Not everyone will WFH permanently but I expect most companies to be much more flexible with work location moving forward.

If your company expects you to travel to a week-long conference while sick they are pieces of crap and you should find a new job or really work to change the culture and behavior. If they can't figure out a way to deal with change fees or travel cancellations they need to get their crap together. I agree that vacations are less likely to change but those are also largely in the summer when people are less likely to get sick.

Also I hope the macho-man mentality of saying someone has "the sniffles" and needs to plow through it at work fades away.

I definitely see the work location and it being much more okay to call in sick then many people have set in their minds today.  I also agree if you have a company forcing you when you are saying you aren't well are POS and need to find a new job.

I'd hope you wouldn't get on a plane if you felt like crap
Well yeah.

I've flown sick, a lot, and I'm guessing most of you have too. Our culture does not place value on shutting it down if you have the sniffles. We do everything while sick. I attended the 2010 CBE with @Trim and other gE'ers, half dead, not knowing what the hell I was sick with. We shared a hotel room, went to the games, to the bars, ate every meal at restaurants. I was very clearly ill to everyone who encountered us, but no one gave a crap, we just kept it moving.

If I got sick, I'd guess it was from booze, not you.

Maybe going forward airlines will be less stringent on rescheduling or cancelling tickets for passengers who are ill.

We need to just stamp this thing out polio style.  I don't want to give it much time to mutate.

I'm kind of expecting the "who goes first" stuff with the vaccine to not get followed, anyway. As soon as everyone at the hospital has their vaccine, I'm thinking they will just take appointments on a first come, first serve basis.

Are there any particular reasons you think that?

Distribution isn't centralized. Nobody is going to know when it's their turn and hospitals aren't going to go down some list to contact people, especially when half of the population doesn't even want it. I think that if the hospital has some vaccines on hand and I call to make an appointment, they will let me come in and get one.

In California, the state determines how many chips each county gets and final distribution is managed by county health departments who are in charge of priority. It'll be a while before there's enough chips to get to the point you describe.

The presentation link Silver shared considered infrastructure and mentioned that long term care facilities already have a good system in place to get residents vaccinated, which is another good reason to get them to the front of the line.

I expect California to be a lot more on the ball with prioritizing vaccines than Kansas, fwiw.

I am going to dress how John Currie would dress for a doctor convention and go get my chip
