Slim Pickens was an interesting guy, a real life cowboy. A fact that kind of blew the mind of Stan Kubrick when he showed up on the set of Dr. Strangelove. Maj Kong was supposed to have been a 4th part for Sellers but he broke his leg and couldn’t get into the B52 mock up. Kubrick never told Pickens (real name Louis Lindsey) that it was a dark comedy, so Pickens just played Kong as his normal everyday self.
BTW the Air Force thought Kubrick had gotten a hold of restricted information as the B52 cockpit was so close to reality.
Here’s an interesting other tidbit. George C Scott only gave into Kubrick’s ideas because Kubrick kept beating Scott in chess. Also most of Scott’s scenes were done without Scott knowing they were being filmed. Kubrick told Scott to practice his scenes playing Gen Buck Turdgison way over the top, but Kubrick quietly instructed the camera guy to film them and that’s the footage they used in the movie. Scott already a notorious pain in the ass was pissed when he found out and vowed never to work with Kubrick again.
Everyone have a great day.
