If you want to guarantee an Oscar nomination then make a pretentious art house trash movie ABOUT Hollywood (i.e. Birdman, The Artist).  Hollywood eats that up with a spoon.

Or film a movie for 12 years. Boyhood is super shitty, but it's got a lot of nominations right now.

No that's a great movie but he portrayed Hollywood negatively. I'm agreeing with 33

Black Swan was really, really good. Not Oscar-bait. The King's Speech was Oscar-bait.

Absolutely. Describing black swan as oscar bait is pretty stupid

I didn't think you were saying it was good or bad.  I was just saying it was good.

Awesome writing. Great story. Intense the whole way. If you leave for the bathroom or soda you will definitely miss something. Stonestreet has some fun lines while playing an otherwise serious role. He was fantastic. James Marsden is awesome as well. For those into trivia Marsden's dad is a professor at K-State. It's @TheLoftMovie on Twitter. It's an old-fashioned who done it meets Basic Instinct kind of thing. You will enjoy this movie.

Re: OT: The Loft   Reply

Glad you liked it.  I plan to see it when I get a chance just because Eric Stonestreet is in it.  Questions, though -- is Stonestreet's part kind of a bit part?  I was surprised to see he was barely visible in the trailer -- just two split-second views of his face and no speaking part.  On Rottentomatoes you can't even see him on the cast list unless you hit the drop-down menu (he's positioned 9th of 10 in the cast).  Surprising that if he was one of the core cast members that the movie publicity would basically shut him, a popular two-time Emmy winner, out of the trailer.

And then there's the 0% Rottentomatoes critics' consensus rating.  I've used that site as a screening tool for years and that is the first zero rating I've ever seen on a movie I was interested in seeing.  The critics'  consensus isn't always on the money (American Sniper got only 73%), but with a movie with some redeeming factors there are usually at least a few who like it.

He is one of the main five characters. He had some of the most fun lines of the bunch. When you see it you immediately feel like you must watch it again to pick up on any details you might've missed. Big credit to the writing. Really enjoyed him in a serious role but he is also the guy that loosens things up a bit. You'll quickly understand this in watching it.

I was interested as well because Stonestreet was in it. After reading 5 reviews  and all said in not so kind words it stinks, think we will go to Unbroken on Sunday, the book was excellent.  I read some reviews of the Belgium version of The Loft released several years ago that were very good, I don't care for subtitles and of course no Stonestreet.

I don't read movie reviews. I just go to what interests me. I thought it was good. Really enjoyed Unbroken too. American Sniper is better than Unbroken. The Loft is a real good suspense/thriller and really enjoyed it.

Finally saw american sniper. Way more fox-newsy than I expected. Would have been more angry had I paid to watch it.

the judge- it was ok.
whiplash- pretty darn good.
liberal arts- enjoyed it. very dlewy.
wasn't whiplash fantastic?  JK Simmons has always been a pretty fun actor, but man, was he something in Whiplash.

i've never heard of liberal arts.  decent enough reviews on rotten tomatoes and i can see the little sundance insignia on the poster.  looks like something i'd enjoy.

Also, I watched Frank again last night.  And yep, still good.

yeah. the movie was very good but jk simmons was great. i do think you would enjoy liberal arts.

@dlew12 - jk simmons hosting snl right now!

Lucy. That type of deep thought crap is my ish. Felt kind of a shorter movie but the sciencey stuff was definitely something I enjoy.

I did! I thought the transition of John in Austin was a bit abrupt and drastic, and maybe could have been spread throughout the movie. And his hometown was fictional,  (although the google maps was not!) :surprised:

I really liked the wittiness of the first half of Frank. Once it started to get serious it felt like a good independent film, not great like the first half did.

Bronson has an incredible performance by Hardy. It's almost like an in depth character analysis of The Joker as a real person. You can't take your eyes of him because you never know what's going to happen next, whether it be kill someone or kiss them.

I saw Rain Man for the first time. Probably not fair because my expectations were so high after all the awards it won and was nominated for. But I thought Hoffman's performance was great, very endearing. Tom Cruise was great, not asked to do much. His transition felt a little forced and dramatic. Overall and Oscar-bait film.

Just watched An American Movie for the first time. I can't recommend it highly enough. It's a documentary about some hicks trying to make a movie (or three or four). It's hilarious and fun/sad to know that there are people in the world like that. Mostly fun.
