Birdman is Oscar-Bait garbage.  Truly an awful movie experience.

Basically an esoteric art house prestige film released right before Oscar season for the sole purpose of winning awards.

Why do they want awards? So that the film makes more money?

Well most people wouldn't.  But critics and the Academy love eccentric art house trash.

Oscar-Bait films rarely win best picture. A nomination is usually all they are after.  Black Swan is a good example.

well Black Swan has an 8.0/10 rating on imdb, which comes from 468,809 users
on Rotten Tomatoes, Black Swan holds an 87% fresh rating (from 273 reviews), and an 84% rating from 173,847 users

surely all those people didn't get caught up in the academy's scheme right?

i definitely think movies time it so they get released around nomination time and the academy definitely has bias, but i dont think the time the movie is released has much to do with the academy's nominations.
I think what my friend Mitch is trying to say is that true love is blind.

sure it does, hence why studios plan timing.  There are  goals for a studio - get the movie in the year they think it will compete best in, and time it so if they think they have a good movie that may be otherwise forgettable, that it drops a month or 2 before nominations, so it's still in theaters and fresh in voters minds.

They can't figure out how to give an award to a CGI robot.  I thought that was obvious.

what does ninja turtles have on rotten tomatoes?

21%.  Which further illustrates my point about the group-think and insecurity amongst film critics.

Correct year, incorrect movie. You're thinking of The King's Speech.

Black Swan was really, really good. Not Oscar-bait. The King's Speech was Oscar-bait.
