generally haven't cared about AOC but hearing her explain that the 3 billion of tax breaks they were going to give to Amazon, and how now it can go to other things, when no, no it can't because that money won't exist anymore because the idea was the tax breaks were a mutually beneficial thing.

and then she said Amazon probably was going to bring in people from outside to fill those new jobs and that's a bad thing, which, okay i guess we're scared of outsiders now?

that was frustrating.

Pretty sure she was representing the views of her constituents there.

Just for the record, I still think AOC’s politics are abhorrent

She would be an awful executive, but I think she's mostly harmless in her current role.

Yeah.  The House of Reps is a great place for a handful of ideological whack-a-doos on all sides.

Agree on the fiscal items. Don’t know if she has opinions outside of those so can’t comment.

Housing prices are a very important issue in NYC, it's slightly different than kc being desperate for anything to move here.

That area will still get filled by other businesses, and it's doubtful they will receive tax breaks at all like Amazon would.

As an outsider it seems pretty dumb to shun Amazon, but like chum1 said she's representing her constituents who actually would be affected by the move.

fair points. it's just hard to imagine anything having the positive economic impact that amazon would. (though whether it's "positive" can certainly be debated if you ask people living in seattle.)

yeah, she probably didn't explain it well, but she's basically right.  because it is very difficult to build additional housing and because the local economy is strong, it's essentially impossible to fit in "new" workers because there's nowhere for them to live and there are already jobs for everyone that can find a place to live.

so adding in the 25k amazon jobs doesn't really add in 25k new jobs, it just displaces 25k previous jobs.  the value to the community is not 25k new workers, just whatever the difference is btwn the salaries of the 25k amazon jobs and the 25k jobs that would be displaced.

as i understand it, about half of the subsidies are available to pretty much anyone and half were special to amazon.  so the 3 billion number isn't really accurate as the cost either.

Amazon getting that tax break to be in NYC was rough ridin' absurd. sys did a good job explaining why

I'm not sure running Amazon out on a rail had the support of her constituents:
Quote
By borough, residents of the Bronx—a predominately Hispanic area—were most excited about the move, with 64 percent approval and 21 percent disapproval, for a net approval of +43 percent. It’s nearly as popular in Staten Island. Queens, whose population is almost half foreign-born, and which will actually absorb the physical Amazon office space, was also enthusiastic—even about the subsidies. Manhattan residents were most skeptical, with only 54 percent supporting the move and a net disapproval of the subsidies of minus 15 percent.

For any company with a sizable warchest, the only responsible thing a city can do is to tell them "you can come here, but we aren't going to give you a dime to make it happen". This is basically the same thing as sports franchise owners getting the cities where they are based to build them new stadiums and new arenas, when the value that they provide to the city is nebulous at best.

If socialism is taking money from one group of people and giving it to another group of people, then isn't Amazon the socialists in this equation? They want that sweet, sweet taxpayer money from the govt, right?

the really stupid thing, for cities fortunate enough to have such favorable economies, is that all they'd have to do to create new jobs is to let people build more housing.

Yeah I can't imagine how that crap would fly here. People still hate the Mid-Market tax break for companies to have offices on a street that was full of people literally smoking crack on the street 24/7. It probably still is, but still.
