I know the timelines are diff, but I would rather build nuke plants than refineries.  I know in reality, we need both though.

Don’t we have the refineries we just shuttered some capacity during covid when demand was super low?

afaik, yes, it's still true that some refineries shut down in 2020 are still offline.  obviously, that makes it worse, but even before that we were low on capacity.  like ever since i've lived here, every time a refinery in ca would shut down for whatever reason, gas would jump 40 cents because there was no spare capacity to absorb the slack of even a single refinery's output.

It’s a shame we can’t nationalize the refineries and have to wait for capitalism

I think the last new refinery was built in the 70s. I can’t imagine the hoops and red tape it would take to build one today.

haven't listened to the podcast, but this answers a question i had - whether the lack of refining capacity was national or global.  i do think it's probably true that some other countries can increase their capacity faster than ourselves, but it doesn't seem like there's a super quick fix here.

LA Ports still jammed and big trucking, still firmly in control

But Pete (and Pete) are on the case.

No news from any of those committees and working groups on redomestication of strategic products, but it's only been 18 months, so, give them some time.

The mid-term pillaging of the strategic petroleum reserve is simply amazing.  (meanwhile drilling lease approval is at or near and all time low)

by not signing new leases are we in fact strategically reserving it?

Yeah, because everyone knows you just show and start drilling, like just in time logistics.  Duh

Rail strike averted  :Woohoo:  my weekend just got a lot better

I heard it wasn’t official, that the unions still have to review and vote, and that this will take place after a 60day cooling off period. Not sure when midterm elections are, but this will put the actual vote on this right around, or just after, the midterms.

Not necessarily averted, possibly just delayed.
