Anyone think that these payments were written in to KU's Adidas contract? Like 2% of the money given actually had an asterisk by it saying "2% to be retained by Adidas for "distribution and advertising" purposes decided by Adidas at a later date"... like KU getting a guarantee from Adidas that they will funnel money to players to keep them coming there?

I guess my thinking is that at KU those coaches don't ever have to get their hands dirty because it's KU. Recruits will be steered towards them by the handlers getting paid by adidas. The system has been in place a long time, coaches don't have to get hands dirty.

Absolutely, but I'd distinguish Nike from the others. Nike's already won multiple times. Adidas and UA are still hoping for their investment in lottery tickets to hit. That's where I question for how long and how much they'd keep w/that strategy.

You also have to add in the money they're paying to schools to have places to stash their lottery tickets. But to your point, it's still not that much because I'm sure that out of, for example, the $197m over 12 years that ku puts out that they'll get from adidas, a decent amount of that is in product, which costs adidas essentially nothing.

Yes. THIS is how it has to work. No way are players worth $100k to Adidas as potential stars. They're worth far more than that to these basketball programs and universities, though.

I would be very surprised if it's in the contract even implicitly. Just factored into the deal, I'd think.

I suspect Coach Self is pretty hurt that his Adidas BFF went behind his back and did this stuff.

There's no way Coach Self could have picked up on the sudden change in interest in KU by these guys after the alleged payouts from Adidas. I'm sure the KU stuff were all high fiving and fist pumping at their sudden good fortune, and now to a person they're likely really let down.
