the math on this is wrong ($27 is per contributor not per contribution, iirc), but it should be well over 15 million and 20 million seems possible.  in addition to sanders and beto, i'll be most interested in seeing donations for harris, buttigieg and warren.

Why is healthcare so expensive?

It’s a little complicated, but if you get the chance you should definitely talk to someone in the healthcare business industry like pharma reps and medical device providers. It’s one of the swampiest of swampy industries in America, with all kinds of kickbacks where everyone is scratching each other’s backs to get rich off of people who just take their doctor’s advice because they trust them.

It really is pretty disgusting even if you only get a tiny piece of the picture.

In a previous life I was employed at a mental health benefits third party administrator.  There was a definite pay to play aspect that existed to get with the "right" brokers in order to get in front of the end client.  This was back 15 years ago or so, nothing even approaching parity with medical benefits, so it was quite a bit more wild-west as to how skeevy you wanted to play.

sys, would you prefer a beto/abrams, abrams/beto, beto/myscan, or abrams/myscan ticket?

if i could unilaterally appoint the president and vice president i would appoint abrams/beto and i also think that abrams/beto would be the best ticket for the general, so if i only was able to unilaterally appoint the democratic ticket it would also be abrams/beto.

with the caveat that i know a lot more about beto, so i could change my mind on abrams with more exposure.

:Ugh:
Health insurance costs began to skyrocket in 94 when most of the BCBS's converted from non-profit mutual companies to for-profit publicly traded companies. For the life of me, I'll never know why they were allowed to do that.

health insurance in the united states is expensive because health care in the united states is expensive.  not the other way around.

It's actually both but more the insurance companies than the healthcare provider.  Insurance companies set the pricing for most of healthcare thru PPO contracts with providers to Usual and Customary limits written into policies.  A hospital can charge a person without insurance any price they want, they are not bound by a contract.  Providers have a payment schedule established with the insurance company they are legally obligated to accept as payment in full. They offset those reduced amounts by over-charging the uninsured.

As someone who worked in the health insurance industry for 15 years I can tell you that skyrocketing premiums and the increase in lesser coverage plans like HMOs can all be correlated to 1994 when they started having to answer to stockholders.

so i think we can rule out profit seeking by insurance companies and hospitals as principal drivers of elevated health care costs in the us.

I'm pretty sure it's not enough doctors, patent laws, and FDA regs being very costly to meet.
