The minimum wage really does need to be raised, even if wages are going up without it. We are going to end up with favelas, otherwise.

Well that's just a lot of people who need to work harder, why should we care?

Also, McDonalds isn't even a minimum wage job. Those places are paying close to $15 now. Migrant workers are going to take the brunt of this and their jobs are very difficult.

Our economy is not at all based on what people deserve. Why are you so obsessed with it?

You brought it up. I’m giving you an opportunity to explain why you think certain jobs are undeserving of a higher salary regardless of the impact it would have on the economy as a whole.

The majority of Americans are never going to feel like forcing employers to pay their employees livable wages so the focus should be on the government providing more affordable housing.

How does everyone feel about tax payers subsidizing labor for Walmart, Amazon, etc?  That’s what a low wage is right now. Tax payers pick up the tab for those employers by means of food stamps and other programs. I mean, KS has a fund to put their kids on health insurance?  Should tax payers be responsible for that?

Feels like Walmart, and the like, should have to pay for their own rough ridin' labor.  :dunno:  Why are companies like Walmart, etc always begging for free stuff?  Maybe Walmart and those guys should bootstrap a little harder so that they don’t need help with their labor costs?

I think most of that issue is that people choose to have kids they can't afford rather than getting an abortion. I think even Walmart pays enough to keep you off of government subsidies if you don't have kids.

I guarantee flipping burgers is "harder" than being a recruiter. Not saying a burger flipper deserves more pay, but let's be honest about what constitutes "hard work".

Yup, that is really the gut of it all. And I get for some guys like Robert Reich are fire breathing socialists, but, that's literally mistaking the point he's getting at. The core problem is all of our production is not being met with proper wage increases. We have completely gotten unmoored from what made America successful post WW2 through basically Reagan. It's not about workers being productive, but rather squeezing them into pulp and then blaming their lack of success on other crap.

Anyone else remember back in 2006 when Tom Friedman was some sort of visionary genius because he wrote that book about how in the future everyone would monetize their blog?

If we are going to do anything, I think it should be a UBI.

I think the public opinion on the current rate of inflation will make UBI politically impossible, at least for the next decade or so.

If the UBI were fully funded with taxes and current spending being redirected, it would have a pretty moderate effect on inflation. Also, the ones that stand to benefit from a UBI the most are the ones most affected by current inflation.

My pro tip for SALT relief is to move to a state with lower SALT.
