Was a sad site. 41,000 seats, probably 36,000 rams plus maybe a few hindered Beavs in attendance.

Not in the first quarter.  The south endzone didn't fill up until about midway through the first quarter, then it thinned out at halftime and never filled again.  The school disperses 10,000 student tickets.  The student seating section is general admission and stretches from the north endzone to behind the south endzone.  The students just cram into it (bench seats, not that they ever sit) even into the aisles. 

There is a ROTC section (not sure why) right next to the band that never filled up, but that couldn't have been more than a couple hundred seats.  The rest of the stadium was full the first half. 

I think a lot of people wanted some relief in the shade because it was in the mid-90's.  I hung out in the concourse during halftime because it was flippin hot.  The concourses are open so you can see the field from them.  There are also TV's about every 10 feet in there.

how much does the stadium hold mike?  Maybe the announced attendance of 37,500 is actually max and not the reported 41K capacity?

There are 36,500 seats, but the stadium is able to accommodate 41,000 in standing room only areas (concourses, New Belgium Porch, OCR room, etc).  Because it was the first game, and not wanting to overload stadium staff, the AD said they were only going to sell 36,500.  My guess is that the extra 1100 or so were probably students that weren't turned away.

Maybe try ticket give aways, groupons or buy one get one type promotions to sell out?

Yes, they did.  Probably something they learned when they met with other schools who recently built stadiums (ie. Minn, Tulane).

What empty seats?

I don't know about unsold seats but there were definitely a lot of empties, it was noticeable on tv. Mike the first picture you posted has blocks of empty seats right in the middle of the section behind the closed in end zone. I believe that's the student section, you guys give way too many student tickets but I'm guessing that's because that many can't be sold on a regular basis. I'm sure school hasn't started yet there but that shouldn't be an excuse.
