Morel hunting is big here in WV as well. Some more tips about when/where: look for freshly dead trees (i forget what species atm) or ones that have burnt and been downed naturally. Morels will pop up like wildfire (no pun intended) after a fire in the woods.

Also, protip for ensuring they have the best chamce to come back next year: cut them at the base of the shroom, dont pull them out of the ground. Leaving the base/root almost guarantees a yearly crop.

They apparently feed off of dead tree roots. That about all I learned when I briefly thought about starting to look for them.
