My gas mower uses about 2 gallons of gas per year and I do nothing to maintain it other than adding a little bit of fuel stabilizer to the gas can when I refill it. I've never added oil or changed it and have had no issues for about 5 years now.

You've gone five years on the original spark plug? Wow. Also, you don't have to change your oil every year but five years is pushing it. Have you at least sharpened your blade during the time?

No. It's a small yard. If my blade ever gets too dull to do a good job, I'll just buy a new blade and screw it on. The first time I fire it up in the spring, it takes a few extra tugs on the pull string, but otherwise, it usually starts right up.

This mower cost about $150 brand new. So I'm spending about $35 per year to mow, including fuel cost. I don't really want to add much maintenance to that because anything would be a significant addition to the overall cost.

I do have to say that electric mowers are a lot cheaper than I expected them to be and I might consider one when my mower stops working. Does anyone have one they have been using for more than a few years? How long does the battery last before it stops holding a decent charge and how much do replacements cost?

My previous lawn mower was one that lasted for 15 years and in that entire time I only changed the spark plug and air filter once, sharpened the blade once and never changed the oil at all, only added some when it got low.

get a reel mower

https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=reel+mower&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Areel+mower
Was legit thinking about it. did not know you could still bag with them. The only negative is that it doesn't mulch at all. I like the clippings getting tucked in under the grass. Really holds the moisture.

Don't buy electric yard equipment, good grief. If you can clean dirt from under your fingernails you have enough skill and common sense to maintain gas powered, plus gas powered has actually sufficient powet to cut grass.

If you're objective is to tickle your grass and get pissed off at how useless your equipment is, buy electric

My neighbor uses one of those old timey push lowers, and I can feel his judging eyes on me when I'm mowing my lawn with my mower that spews smoke every time I use it.

I have literally done zero maintenance to my lawnmower since it was new in 2006.  Well I replaced the blade once.  I also never drain or burn off the gas end of season.

I have an electric mower for our small yard and it is great. If you want a Binford 10,000 to cut your half acre, go nuts. If you have a small lawn like me and Gooch, just order the one from Amazon with the best reviews. The cord was a nuisance for about 30 seconds and then you figure it out and everything is fine.

Do not recommend a reel mower. Gross. I have one, it is worthless. If you get behind on lawn work (which I do, and the electric handles it fine), you're certainly never going to take that blade thing in to get it sharpened.

Never changed my oil because I'd rather just buy a new mower, but I've had to replace the spark plug several times and I sharpen the blade several times a year because I have a bench grinder and I mow close to half an acre something like 30x a year. I like mowing and other manual labor as a break from thinking all day at work.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, K-State fans could have beheaded the entire KU team at midcourt, and K-State fans would be celebrating it this morning.  They are the ISIS of Big 12 fanbases.

See if you can find a remote control version.
Like a roomba for the yard? I think they have them and you bury a wire like those dog things.

Yeah, that would take about 4-5 hours of work every week from spring to fall.
