it seems pretty simple, really.  if you think things like trying different restaurants, seeing new sights, and pontificating about this stuff with your old lady for the next thirty to forty years is as good as it gets, then plan not to have kids.  then, when you're on your deathbed, you can go out with smile on your face, thinking about how awesome it was to eat that pizza in venice with the oysters on it, shell and all.

Part of me thinks one of Chum's major reasons for having kids is have someone to take care of him when he is old.

when i think about major life decisions and what type of life i want to lead, i think about what i will think of how i lived my life when i'm old.  i know, for example, that i will not say, "i wish i would have sat on my ass and watched more crap on tv," so i try not to do that now.

It kinda wild how different people like different things.  The extremes on each side are kind interesting to me.

Sys would let that zombie virus loose on the planet if he thought he could get rid of all of the humans and keep the world pristine in other ways.

Chum1 will kill himself if he ever outlives his kid(s), or if they were to shun him.

The funny thing is, that both view points seem to be fairly common.  I know quite a few people of each type.

i think the important thing that keeps getting missed is that people with kids can/do have just as much fun as people without kids.  it's just that instead of passing out and throwing up from too much pak'ing, you pass out and throw up from too much sun at the zoo (or whatevs)

People with kids don't take 9-day trips to Kauai or impromptu weekend trips to Chicago or two trips to Vegas in six months.   at those travel plans.

neither do most people without kids dumbass.

i did however manage to go to cancun last month with my kids and a bunch of friends and their kids. key west for five days with my wife six months ago. austin to hang out with friends seven months ago. chicago with friends nine months ago. i'll go to boston with friends in a month. my wife will instead be headed to portland w/ friends in six weeks. wife and i and friends will prob go to negril this fall and i am probably going to go to tokyo a year or so from now. i also pak'd so hard w/ sd, et al last saturday that i didn't feel normal again until monday and tortuga and stevesie and i have pak'd together for the last two away bball games. kids are some kind of lame crutch that unfortunately a lot of parents either blame for not being able to do stuff or fixate on to the point of it probably being unhealthy for the kid. neither of which i want any part of. have kids or don't but most normal functioning adults should be able to have them and still manage to figure out ways to do others things that they like while simultaneously being good parents. not that hard.

Having kids is great when you don't have to worry about $$$.  Lucky for me I am .   Plus my kids are beautiful, so there's that too.

But really what I like most about the kiddos is when I have a terrible day at work.  They ALWAYS find a way to make me smile.  :)

I have a kid and the wife and I are heading to Italy this spring to drink wine and get weird.   :dunno:

Good.  Get with BBF$$Kat on his extra ticket for Saturday and what time we're leaving.

LOL, well played.  My official excuse is that i'm going to the casino for a friend's birthday.  You guys should come down after hipster pizza.   We'll be :kstategrad:'n it all over that place.

Yeah, I forgot about that.  We probably won't be back to 'ta until 10.  I'll probably want to eat pizza leftovers at home at that point.

Despite nearly killing everyone in their front yard on the fourth of july one time, I have found them to be delightful youngsters.

Can we talk about Daris's dog for a second?

Wow.  What a great dog.

Kids are fun.  I never thought that I'd like going to Gymboree, but at this point, spending an hour with my son and watching him have a lot of fun really makes my day.  It's become a highlight of my week.

Also, to Daris' point, yeah, a lot of people can do stuff when they have kids.  It's easier if you live in a place where you can leave them with someone.  However, if you live farther away from family/relatives, it's harder, but yeah, you can still do pretty much whatever you used to do.

I find that the main thing that's different is that we don't go to movies much any more, but even if I didn't have kids, I'd probably still go to less movies because I'm just getting cheaper in my old age, and I refuse to pay $20 bucks to watch a 90 minute Kate Hudson movie my wife picks out that is guaranteed to suck, so I will gladly use the kids as a crutch to get out of doing that.

That's why you pay $20 for a movie and then you and your girlfriend spend all day sneaking into three additional movies.  And none of those movies are shitty kid movies.

(Except The Tooth Fairy once.)

Meh.  I don't want to spend all day at a movie theater.  I have other stuff to do.

If I didn't have anything better to do than watch 4 movies in one day at the theater with my girlfriend I'm pretty sure I'd just  :goodbyecruelworld:

No offense though.  I'm sure it was super awesome.

I've grown a lot because of my kids.  Not that it couldn't have happened any other way, but I'm a better person because all of the crap you go through trying to raise a kid to be a functioning part of society. There's times when I look at my friends taking trips to scotland and crap like that and feel envious - but I'm not sure I would trade lives with anyone.

So question for all the dads here: when you became dads did you start listening to sentimental dad-rock/dad-folk about how much you love your kids? Like Cat Stevens-y stuff?  For me this is the biggest mystery to uncover that might lead me to have kids. Would I?  Would I listen to it?
