No, we live in a house, but it's in the city.

Expecting first kid in August. I hate buying things I don't need. Not a full on minimalist, but as close as my wife will tolerate. Any advice on things you bought that were absolutely NOT necessary? I don't want to deprive my child of all material possessions, but I also don't want them (and me) drowning in useless crap.

Get all of 8manbro's stuff

This is more an issue of limiting the volume of crap that I have than it is a frugality initiative.

I have pretty much zero desire for a three car garage. I enjoy living in a modest home by utilizing all available space in the most efficient manner possible.

You will need no more than 3 pairs of socks and 6 outfits at any one stage and time of year.

Kids, you don't need them to have a hugely fulfilling life. But they also won't stop you from having a hugely different fulfilling life.

Toys. This is crucial. Name the first toy that you remember. What were you, 4 years old? What the eff do you think your 1 month old is going to do with a room full of toes? By the ideal toy for a 4 year old and go ahead and give it to them now.

well, what would you do with a room full of toes if you were too stupid to spot a typo? If you can think of something good, then go get yourself a roomful of toes. Knock yourself out!

I'm going to gamble that this advice is going to be totally slammed by you youngsters but, DO NOT teach your kids sign language in lieu of letting them learn to speak normally. Somewhere in the early millennial round of parents, someone got the cockamamie idea that kids grow up better if they don't have to be frustrated learning how to speak. Frustration is also known as facing an obstacle and learning to overcome it. It's part of life.

You can thank me later after you save money on speech therapists.

Dobs, that logic is crap. Why not put your abused 3 year old in a closet until they can remember it? Then do stuff with them?
