The Matrix had a much bigger pop culture (and film making) impact than American Beauty. I know that's not the sole criterion or even a paramount criterion for Academy voters, but it should be.

Take last night's winner, Moonlight. (Or the Artist, or most recent winners). I predict that nobody except film buffs will find these movies particularly memorable a few years from now.

Conversely, Michael J. Fox stepped out of a Delorean on stage last night to thunderous applause, over 30 years later. It's still as beloved a film now as it was then.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, K-State fans could have beheaded the entire KU team at midcourt, and K-State fans would be celebrating it this morning.  They are the ISIS of Big 12 fanbases.

Yeah but not really. Movies like Twilight and Spider Man 6 will be forgotten just as quickly. (To be fair, no clue who has actually won the MTV awards).

Like our electoral system, Best Picture is not a popularity contest. Tons of crap movies have had a big "impact on culture" (no idea why this becomes the sole criterion, but w/e).

Tons of crap movies are popular in the short run. And true, a few are popular for being crappy. But that's none of the movies on my revised list. Those movies have left a deeper mark than than the ones that received best picture.

You should write a letter to the academy of motion picture arts and sciences about your displeasure.

Some people just don't understand #art. It's like how Salieri doesn't get why people like Mozart so much better than him. Sad!

You won't say who the winners should be in the last 17 years because it's impossible to judge their pop culture impact/staying power and yet you want this to be the standard for giving a yearly award?

I can tell you guys right now that in 15 years nobody is going to remember Spotlight like they remember Fury Road. Talk about a snub.

Ok, so maybe Warren was handed the wrong envelope. But the envelopes are pretty clearly labeled so....

Sure it should be the standard. Doesn't mean they'll always get it right.

He clearly knew it was the wrong card. He could have called for the correct one, but then just gave it to Dunaway.
