Taking the ACT early did nothing but waste a day and crush my self confidence as a youngster.  Although maybe that is what made me work hard to be successful today.  :Wha:

IDK, it made taking the ACT something I didn't technically have to do, after that, to get in to a state school.  :dunno:

Duke is pud. Does Stanford have a TIP program I have two very young but obviously elite black kids that needs to use Stanford as a safety school.

I would just have your kids do the Duke program, but then mail Stanford a copy of the results so they know your kids can be stolen on signing day.

I don't actually know this, but I assume you could take the ACT at that age even without Duke's prodding. Also, my advice to absolutely everyone who reads this would be not to settle for the ACT score of your grade school/middle school self.

I think I performed better on the ACT as a junior than I would have if I hadn't already taken the test in the 6th grade.

I think Stanford would laugh at that, I'd be better off sending them a letter from National American University.

When I took it, it was just a "show up next sat at this place and good luck" type thing.

My daughter is in the program and will be taking it next year.  The teacher that works with her group told me in her IEP meeting this year that he actually does a month of test prep and has been getting kids every year scoring in the low to mid 20's.  He had a kid two yrs ago get a 29.  :surprised:

This was my experience, both in 6th grade and in high school.

Yeah.  I took it in 7th and my junior yr.  I never studied.  It was never presented to me as a test you studied for.  It was presented to me as a test you should already know if you are taking care of biz in your classes(jr yr, obviously, not 7th grade).

The people who presented the test that way did us a disservice, imo. It is definitely a test that can be prepared for.

I still have a huge problem with my HS Counselor.  He didn't tell anyone about any scholly apps or anything.  It occurred to me to go ask in Dec my senior year and he told me that I just missed the cut off on some major app/essay that applied me for over 80% of the ones he knew of.  Didn't announce it to the class, no other teacher new anything about it, etc. Only two kids in our entire class applied because they were the only two that it occurred to prior to Dec, I guess.   I still want to punch him.

Here's the problem with Duke:  let's say you get all these letters, starting in 4th grade or whenever.  By the time you're ready to pick a school Duke is now all stale, and other schools, while perhaps academically inferior, are all hot and new and exciting.

Plus Duke's campus is pretty damned small. They do all of this work to get their name out there to middle schoolers and still can't get more than about 6600 students to enroll.

They have online tests for that.

Although I thought I read that IQ is primarily intended to measure relative intelligence in children rather than adults.
