I don't know what you're advocating or disagreeing with me about in that link.

I'm not really advocating or disagreeing with you with that link.  I just saw that story on FB and thought it was relevant.

I think manufacturing jobs were good back when they paid well.  With all the union busting legislation in the past 20 years, manufacturing jobs suck because they don't pay much more than the average service job.

If I could make 80K putting together a 1000 widgets a day, then yeah... that might be a good job.  But those jobs pay about $30K a year now.  I worked with guys who lost fingers in the factory.  Most of them thought they were lucky because the $10K per knuckle paid for their new Dodge Ram.  In my 20 years of working in offices, never met anyone who lost a limb at work.

Nationwide, manufacturing generated $2.1 trillion in GDP in 2013, equal to 12.5 percent of total U.S. GDP (Bureau of Economic Analysis 2014b).  That's not insignificant.  I also think this country is uniquely leveraged to grow in this area as far as $'s are concerned (not necessarily number of jobs, but high-paying jobs).  While China et al are sucking the shitty manufacturing jobs from the US we should be sucking the good jobs from western Europe.

What's best for America and Americans guy here:

End Wars of Aggression-check

Defeat Islamic State and stabilize region-check

Bring home offshore capital for a one time relatively low fee- check

Reduce foreign based military installations and build a strong mobile military- check

Make friends/calm the waters with Russia-check

Secure borders and seek immediate immigration overhaul- check

Deport criminal illegals- check

Re-evaluate trade agreements, seek to tweak-check

Incentivize US based manufacturing- check

Overhaul healthcare interstate insurance offerings, no required health insurance, keep pre existing condition clause- check

National infrastructure and science/engineering/education initiative-check

Here's a dumb question... Why do we want more manufacturing jobs?  As someone who worked in a couple of factories I can confirm they're shitty jobs.

They're better than a lot of jobs, and they're also better than no jobs.  Germany has done a lot to bolster it's mfg jobs with huuuuuuge growth in high-tech mfg, which is where we should go because we can absolutely compete with Germany in this arena.

That would require the equiv of free ed, though, given their apprenticeship programs.  So, wake me up when that is discussed as something more than lazy libs wanting something for free.

robots will be doing most of these jobs (all jobs) in 10 years anyways, it's probably not worth training in more new humans for anything.

This thread is going to get fun when Sys drops the idea of guaranteed income as part of that.

we could have a lottery at birth where everyone randomly gets assigned the income tied to the production of an individual robot.
