Every generation has to register, if a parent isn't registered then you can't register even with direct lineage proof. If a parent is registered but you don't then your kids will be unable to register.

That's how I understand it at least.

Having grown up in Oklahoma, I have very little documented Native American and receive no benefits. But I do know of plenty of people who have been given financial assistance for schooling, both college and trades, assistance with buying property as far as helping with down payments/loan rates and even covering closing costs. If living close enough, many tribes provide daycare and other early ed for discounted (maybe free?) rates.

I think you must be a card carrying tribal member for most of these benefits, though. As even the average American has a small percentage of NA DNA.

(I'm not 100% sure on any of this, but could ask around, I guess.)

I don't know how things were at harvard in the 80s, but being considered a "minority" in law school while I was there was probably helpful.   Lots of job fairs and so forth.  Plus, I think firms like to have a diverse hiring class.  Whether those opportunities off-set occupational racism or bias against minorities, i don't know, but I bet it probably did. 

But it's probably apples and oranges comparing across several decades.

Any examples where it does? Trying to figure out if I could get a 23 & me kit to pay for itself.

Because 1. The grants don't cover as much as you think and 2. I somehow didn't qualify. She might have been 1/4th, but if you saw her, you saw it. We found all kinds of crazy Indian artifacts at her farm when she passed away 2 springs ago in storage. I should probably do some more research. Her farm was on the Santa Fe Trail and the land had been passed on from generations before her.

Correct. DNA info, blood, or any kind of personal documentation does nothing for the Cherokee tribe (I would assume any tribe for that matter). The only way you can identify as any form of Cherokee is with proof of a direct ancestor on one of their original tribal rosters.

their interest is exclude everyone not already a tribal citizen.  not all tribes are that exclusionary, but i imagine many are.
