Have always wanted to go to Istanbul.  Planned on doing so once the kids hit their mid teen years.

Obviously crazy, but this is not even close to the first time the military has done this.

http://www.wsj.com/articles/turkish-prime-minister-reports-coup-attempt-1468613584

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jun/29/turkey-pays-price-erdogan-blindness-to-isis-threat

In some circles it is thought the the coup failure likely spells the end of a secular constitution in Turkey.   Observers are all over the map with some saying that Turkey is more "liberal" and secular then ever but some believe that has been done on purpose so as to draw the ire of ultra conservatives who strongly support Erdogan and his government, and some believe that will draw in more support for Erdogan from moderates who want a more theocratic based Turkish constitution but not the whole Sharia pie.    Erdy's critics are quick to point that he's still spending more efforts on cracking down on secular oriented opposition and the Kurds, then he his on fighting radical Islamic Terrorists

Another school of thought was that the coup attempt, which essentially had no real hope of being successful was an inside job so Erdogan could continue to consolidate power away from the parliament and into the presidency.

Cutest picture so far:

I would love to know the demographic, religious and political make up of these reported large adoring crowds welcoming Erdy back.

I've also seen the false flag and I wonder about Erdo creating a vacuum for it to happen or having someone from his inner circle act as a well meaning coup plotter.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/07/15/turkey-coup-in-a-country-once-dominated-by-generals-the-army-see/

In lockstep Obama calls for all to support Erdy,  hopefully Erdy's party holds true to their constant claims that they will preserve the majority of a secular constitution.   Otherwise it's likely going to be bad in the long run IMO because Erdy and his party have more then enough evidence against them that they are soft on ISIS and obviously very hard on the anti-ISIS Kurds.    If Erdy consolidates power and creates ISIS sanctuaries, bad, really bad.

Surprised b.o. didn't send cash and arms to the coup people. Really whiffed on an opportunity to destroy another country.

It's just comical at this juncture how this administration always manages to come out in support of Theocrats and their parties as they attempt to consolidate power in Middle Eastern countries.   Turkey has for decades been the bulwork of division been politics and religion (Islam) even if the HuffPo writer bitches about the secularism allowing those in power to discriminate against certain groups, that can be found in any political society.   It's still a far better option then a ruling class inclined to hardcore Islamic law.

A little off FSD.

Turkey today requested a preacher named Gulen be extradited to the United States because he is The Mastermind behind the coup attempt. This is the same guy that has given millions of dollars to the clintons and their Foundation. Sounds like rotten eggs in the souffle.
