a month or two ago, I turned my radio/phone off in the car and haven’t turned it back on except for a minute here or there.

this is part of a larger strategy that I’ve executed coming out of the election to take back my life from radio/television/social media/etc.

i’ve been setting up technology free zones and times, and regulating the content when outside those zones

daily dog walk- 45 minutes, no phone, radio, music, internet

work- no radio, music, check the internet maybe twice a day

in the car- no phone, radio, music, internet

i’m off twitter completely and although i’ve moved to bluesky, I might look at it every other day

Based.

If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

Clams that is admirable. I need to set some boundaries myself, getting off twitter was a good step for me. IG is fun sometimes but it is such a waste of time.

The thing about Twitter is to just stick to the people you follow. Over 10+ years I've found the perfect mix of college sports/NFL/random sports/local news/national news/random accounts etc that I find interesting and follow. Also only tweet about sports (but not to recruits).

I think I have switched over to the "For You" tab like twice and that was by accident.

at the risk of great humiliation, i have to admit that i’ve never understood IG.  the pictures are small, i can’t sort my feed, and i it really has a weird algorithm that shows me more stuff from people i’m not connected to rather than those that I am. or maybe my connections just don’t post much.

i seem to have 1) random cavalier king charles spaniel posts, 2) amy serdaris content (probably the best thing about IG), and 3) whatever sporting event the steve dave family has most recently played in.

IG is just a vehicle for my foodie pics.

But I’ve found that I’ve essentially replaced tiktok (which I deleted for being a time-suck) with Instagram reels.  Considering deleting the app off my phone.

I also left Twitter. It was very fun, but way too much of a time waster for me.

Reels are like digital crack. Influencers doing little flashes of content telling you how you aren't doing life correctly just keeps you scrolling and scrolling. I made a pact with one of my kids to take a one week break. I like IG other than the reels. Facebook has become a cesspit of bot-created accounts and groups but for a lot of community / school orgs that is the place where the post updates about activities etc.

our brains are not designed to be polluted with this much crap.  people are being brainwashed to replace real life experiences with social media experiences.

every minute you spend swiping through tik tok or whatever is a minute lost that you could have spent on something constructive with your family or friends or just improving yourself.  these minutes add up and collectively, we’re worse off for it.  these companies are manipulating people. zombie apocalypse is real.

i’m not advocating that we stay off of the internet, but instead, for using the platform in the way in which it was originally intended for- sharing valuable information such as how to play the piano or reseed the lawn or speak Spanish or whatever.

I am not a huge Haidt fan, but I found a good amount to agree with in The Anxious Generation and it lays out a more detailed case for not having kids get smart phones and how social media is designed to monopolize our time and it is incredibly effective at doing that.

I've been limiting my Twitter time and moved mostly to Bluesky. Still some sports and local people that haven't moved over to bluesky quite yet. I've never had facebook, IG or tiktok and have no interest. I like Reddit and it's probably my biggest time suck. That is my go to when I need to figure something out. There is a subreddit for just about anything. I need to just delete some crap and I probably will soon. We limit the kids iPad time to a reasonable amount. I keep saying I'm going to ban youtube shorts and I need to follow through on this one for sure. Someone said they only allow their kids to watch something "with a plot" or that is at least 15 minutes long. This prevents doomscrolling and that constant flipping you get from shorts or IG or whatever. That is a big part of jacking up kids attentions spans, I think.

Word on the street is that Johnny Dare's show just got canceled and their last show is tomorrow.  I haven't listened to him in forever but it still kinda feels like a big deal.
