I ended up actually unhooking it. didn't drain it though. also it was already unhooked but I went over to it to unhook it.

for those unsure of the issue here, water trapped inside the spigot and hose freezes and splits the spigot.  This can lead to flooding in the house once it thaws.     Modern frost-proof hose bibbs prevent this in theory, but they can also fail, though rare.   I know someone who had a $10k+ insurance claim because of this....so it's just a good idea.

The pipe right behind the faucet breaks. If your home is modern at all, there will be a second valve further back on the pipe, so it will only leak when you turn the water on.

You can still break a freeze-proof faucet in front of the valve if you leave a hose connected to it, so it's just good practice to disconnect it.

If its cold enough outside, the water can freeze back into the pipe and expand leading to this. Plus the basement temp in some areas of your basement generally isn't that warm. Granted, this type of stuff happens when its 0 or below outside, not in the 20s or 30s like right now.

they make insulated covers you can attach on the outside of your house on the faucet, to help prevent this

Yup, I can vouch for this. Depending on the design of the house & location of the faucet, it doesn't have to get all that cold to happen.
