If you're not a follower of Jesus feel free to use objective thought to decide for yourself.

of course, and objectively showing compassion to a person fleeing a war zone is a good decision, and of course there is risk, but really how much risk is it?

my fear of getting hurt in a terrorist attack ranks just slightly above my fear of something bad happening to me because of climate change. sure its possible, but ridiculously long odds. best thing i can do is do my best to raise my kids to be positive members of society, and be kind to my neighbors. certain things are so far beyond my control its almost laughable so worrying about it is pretty pointless

Terrorism and crime affects you regardless of whether it actually kills you or one of your loved ones. I'd rather live in a country with stronger borders and a freer society inside.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, K-State fans could have beheaded the entire KU team at midcourt, and K-State fans would be celebrating it this morning.  They are the ISIS of Big 12 fanbases.

of course it affects me. also affected the refugees fleeing a war, I'd say of the 2 of us, it affected them more.

what does "home of the chiefs" even mean anymore?  more like "home of the paranoid."

listen man, there are bad dudes out there no doubt. and they might come here, no doubt. but this reactionary "NO SYRIAN'S ALLOWED IN KANSAS" mindset got us the Patriot Act, which IMO was a huge blunder and an assault on liberty. perhaps the governors and trump and others who are so quick to say "STAY OUT MIDDLE EASTERNERS" ought to consider their actions a little more cautiously, and learn from the past.

So you don't like the USAPatriot Act (I don't either), but you're not really concerned about terrorism? What do you think spawned the USAPatriot Act? Again, I would prefer to be a nation of strong borders as opposed to a police state with police armed in riot gear and AK-47s on every corner. That's what you see in Paris.

KSU, I'm probably not going to change your mind about this, so after this you can continue to hash it out with everyone else here in the pit. I am concerned about terrorism, and of course I think its a threat here in the USA, but opening the doors of our nation to refugees fleeing a war, is worth the risk. Let's consider as a nation, who is our neighbor? JMHO.

I think that's what a lot of people are trying to understand, and really are just pumping the brakes to take the time to try to understand it.  Apparently a lot of people in support of bringing them here have either 1) already looked at the data/facts and made their decision, or 2) are willing to accept any risk to show these people compassion.

This is what happens when you relocate hundreds of thousands of muslim refugees to the United States and they don't assimilate.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/22/world/middleeast/from-minneapolis-to-isis-an-americans-path-to-jihad.html?_r=0

Quote
Most of the American ISIS volunteers display an earnest religious zeal, usually newfound. [huh, wonder where that's coming from?] ... The majority of the Islamic State recruits are men, but there are quite a few women. The volunteers include teenagers too young to drive and middle-aged adults with families and careers; petty criminals and diligent students. A substantial minority are converts to Islam, while others are the children of immigrants with roots in 10 Muslim countries.

The only cluster in the country is in Minneapolis [home to the biggest Somali population in the country thanks to refugee resettlement], where two dozen young men with Somali roots departed in recent years to fight with the Shabab, the affiliate of Al Qaeda in Somalia. Now, to the distress of Somali elders, more than a dozen others have left or have tried to leave to join ISIS.

http://www.startribune.com/two-rochester-women-get-10-20-years-for-aiding-somalia-terrorists/207699791/

Quote
The women, both U.S. citizens who came here from Somalia, were convicted in 2011 of conspiring to provide material support to Al-Shabab in fundraising in Rochester that prosecutors have called “a deadly pipeline” of money and fighters from the United State to Somalia.

They have had wide support in the Twin Cities’ Somali-American community, and many in the courtroom were stunned by the sentences, especially the 20-year sentence for Ali.

Hassan Mohamud, a St. Paul imam, said he believes the sentences were too long and that both women should have been released.

“All they did was aid the poor and the orphans,” he said.

But prosecutors said it was clear from the phone conversations they monitored that the women knew they were raising money for Al-Shabab, a group labeled a terrorist organization by the U.S. State Department in 2008.

There are plenty of other examples. We're getting enough problems from radical Islam being bred in foreign nations, why do we want to encourage it here?

More than a dozen have tried to leave to join ISIS? Good grief, that's nothing. You are insane.

I don't know, maybe buying a gun and shooting up a school?

But I guess that can happen with our own citizens, so let's just let them in with a reasonably thorough vetting.

Am I correct in assuming that these tired and poor will be sent to work in our textiles plants, factories, plantations and/or infantries? We can work them 65 hours a week at reduced wages, including the children, correct?
 If so, yay. #nina, tho

Perhaps this is too pragmatic, but here are my hesitations regarding the issue:

1) It seems illogical and irrational to put people on airplanes and take them thousands of miles from their home, to a place where they know nobody, know not the language, nor possess the resources to succeed, when there are dozens of adjoining countries they could take refuge in. Further, isn't the idea that they'll return home once things are safe?

2) I don't know how anyone ever trusts the federal government to do anything correctly, particularly this exceedingly incompetent administration, particularly on this issue, and as such have zero confidence that they'll properly screen any isis people. It seems like erring on the side of caution may be warranted under these circumstances. Send the other countries money if you want to help.

I think the US is probably the least likely place in the world for these people to end up being terrorists. Only issue is it's probably too easy for them to get guns if they decide to be gun terrorists.

Do they become citizens?

I would be worried that this country is proven to be a good incubator of radical Islam.  I'm less worried about bad people getting in than I am about them becoming bad people once they are here.
