Give me your tired...your poor.
« on: November 17, 2015, 11:11:44 AM »
So I'm not sure some people understand the actual vetting process for refugees. So here is an article about the 2 year process it takes. It's totally different than the refugee process in Europe. But keep being afraid of a terrorist posing as a refugee getting on a plane with a fake passport, like that wasn't a threat Before the refugee crisis.

I'd say we are decended of prudent, thinking men, and taking unnecessary risks is stupid.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, K-State fans could have beheaded the entire KU team at midcourt, and K-State fans would be celebrating it this morning.  They are the ISIS of Big 12 fanbases.

Many of those refugees have already started to arrive. So much for your mythical 2-year vetting process. And regardless, Obama is trying to fast track the process despite warning and objections from Homeland Security.

As for the Statue of Liberty trope, I don't see the part about importing people from terrorist hotbeds and putting them all on welfare.

Well considering the Syrian Civil War started in 2011..it's reasonable that refugees have been applying to come to America since then. So that is why we already have refugees from Syria.

And I should have known better than to expect any kind of compassion or humanity from you.  My apologies.

i listened to a bit on earholing librag NPR about refugees being proven to be a net economic gain

the idea that they are running here to steal obamaphones from kazdubs coinpurse is not based in data. they are running here to start a new life in safety and freedom to not get murdered or bombed

That's all great, vet first though, completely.

But then again, they can get to Mexico and pretty much just ride or walk-in from there and then head to an asylum city.

Honestly, any terrorist worth worrying about is getting in this way (or via a fake passport or some other way) and not as a refugee. Getting in as a refugee would be about the most difficult way for a terrorist to get in at this point.

Why is it our responsibility to bring them here?

I'm cool with bringing the educated ones, FWIW.  Doctors and engineers and folks like that.  Just not folks that would be in the bottom third or fourth of wage earning potential.

Also the fact that some people are so afraid of refugees, but want to allow people to buy guns without any sort of background check is very funny to me. I guess better to be killed by a crazy American than a terrorist .

I don't get the "only take the smart ones" thing either. There are plenty of people qualified for those jobs already.

It's not, but I think from a moral perspective (if you give a crap about that), we clearly should offer shelter to those who are fleeing terrorists.

It's the right thing to do, even if it does mean we may have to be a little brave about it.

Not to mention, this is very clearly a global crisis, and I think it's fair for the US to carry its share of the humanitarian weight when our allies (although notably absent is Israel...) are doing their part.

this thread is a good read:

http://goEMAW.com/forum/index.php?topic=35519.0

and this is a great post

It's burdensome having to always step up when other pussy nations won't, but I'm proud that America is willing to shoulder that burden. It's what makes us the worlds greatest superpower and the greatest force for good the world has ever known.

The refugee arguments are largely racist, sure.  But the security arguments are actually an improvement upon the arguments that bringing Guantanamo terrorists to supermax American prisons like Ft. Leavenworth constitutes any threat.

People qualified here already?  There is demand for more doctors and it's going unfilled.

If you're playing kickball and you have first pick, aren't you picking the best kickball player?  Why not take the best ones we can?

Was taking the hmong a success?  I honestly don't know.  I don't think they have assimilated very well.

What makes these people different than the ones being murdered by Joseph Kony?  Do we not have a moral obligation the help them as well?

Where is the line that separates people we are morally obligated to help from the ones we aren't morally obligated to help?
