Likes/Not Likes - LaTech
« on: September 20, 2015, 09:59:53 AM »
Please list the things you liked and didn't like from our game against Louisiana Tech in this thread.

Likes:
-winning in 3OTs (jfc, we got really lucky)
-cantele (ya know, it takes some stones to go through what he did and then hit clutch kicks yesterday)
-Lee (I guess I have to put him here, he had some big plays down the stretch)
-Silmon getting more touches than Jones
-Less Dimel (although he managed to Winston it up at the goal line)

Not Likes:
-Tackling (apparently not one of the 16 fundamentals)
-the goddamn Wildcat formation (need to add more wrinkles than just jones to the left for -3 and Jones to the right for -2, yes we scored on it, but it has become worthless)
-would it be that tough to mix in a screen?
-DB's (I think i'm just pissed at the 3rd and longs we gave up and am choosing to blame this group)
-Our offense inside the 10yd line

Not Sure:
-WR's (ya, ya, I know, they had some good catches, but JFC, if we catch half the 5yd out patterns we drop, we might not have needed 3OTs. we are entirely too inconsistent and we don't have a playmaker at QB to make up for the drops we have)
-Hubes (I think he is going to turn it over come big 12 play)

My guy, Kody Cook appears to be a competent receiver.

I put Bazooka Joe firmly under the likes.

After watching Mizzou's shitshow of a QB situation with Maty Maulk and Drew Lock, I'm pretty happy where he is after start three.

Texas Christian University coach Gary Patterson has been hired as Kansas State's 34th football coach, multiple sources have confirmed to GoPowercat.com.  Patterson replaces Ron Prince, who was fired Wednesday. - Tim Fitzgerald   Nov, 7, 2008

I dunno. Just because our QB isn't a disease infested whore doesn't make him a saint.

I'm going to blame some of the drops on Bazooka Joe for the same reason why he can't throw a five yard out. Why does he only throw the ball incredibly hard, like every time, no matter the route? I love that he is so confident in his arm, but my god man mix in a change up.

Early in the game he lofted a 5-10 yard out over to KSU's sideline that would have been picked off by a better/faster corner.

I'm firmly in the he doesn't throw or run very well camp. So it magnifies both deficiencies. If he did one well, I wouldn't hate him as much. Silmon emerging will make him look a lot better as well.

Likes:
Lee - the man is a beast. It would prob hurt so I wouldn't enjoy it very much, but I think I'd let him have his way with me.

Heath - the punt return that gave us a chance to win. And that great catch in OT1.

Cook - I don't care how much you interfere, I'm gonna catch the mother effing ball.

Hubener - showed up huge in OT.

Silmon - I know he's not elite, but he sure looks like it compared to Jones.

Dislikes:
Heath - the WTF negative 30-yd punt return.

Play calling - I swear I'm going to absolutely lose my crap if we run the stupid wildcat five-plus times per game.

Play calling - hmmm, we're gaining yards handing off to Silmon... let's start calling a bunch of pass plays.

Play calling - that two point conversion attempt. We deserved to lose based on that.

Play calling - general red zone WTF calls

Play calling - why do we keep handing off to Dimel? He's not an RB.

Play calling - I want to keep listing these, but I'm getting too depressed and need to stop here.

Likes: Lee, Cantele, Cook, Skip Holtz accepting the chop block penalty instead of taking 4th & 2, Silmon getting 24 carries

Dislikes: The muffed punt, Wildcat formation

Snyder was directly asked about the Wildcat during the postgame presser. He acknowledged that running out of it is not working and hinted at the fact that Jones was supposed to throw it. I wonder how much of it is poor play design and how much is just the team not executing the play as it is called. Either way, until they can get things fixed in practice they need to get rid of it.

we haven't thrown out of the wildcat in years, they haven't even looked to throw it, that quote by Bill doesn't make any sense

The Wildcat should be reserved for backup QBs that can run. Like Delton (if he's healthy) or Banks. Or Bazooka if Ertz wasn't hurt.

He should just rename it to HB draw so teams don't get confused

My guess is that 1 or 2 of the plays yesterday were run/pass options and Jones never threw it. I'd have to rewatch to see if any of the TEs released, but it sounds like Jones is just ignoring the pass option part of the play.

Dislikes:
- Ultra conservative play calling after 1) the late 4th quarter fumble recovery (looked like coaching staff was just playing for a field goal) and 2) the La Tech punt with under two minutes to go (at first I wondered why Holtz punted, but realized he knew we would run it up the gut three times and could stop that).
- Red zone play calling all game long
- Dropped passes
- No Warmack

Likes: 3-0 with lots of motivation to work through the BYE week.

Defense is for real. If our offense could actually score and put some pressure on, defense would look even better.

In hindsight, 3OT games are always fun to watch, just sad in this case given the competition.

Dislikes: dropped passes :curse:

Use of wildcat formation.

For being good overall, our D should have been able to force a turnover by now.

More:

I really like Willis's play yesterday; he went into beast mode and took over the game.  Our d line is legit.

I dislike Joe's running ability.  He just doesn't have it.

I dislike McDaniel's play yesterday; his worst game as a wildcat IMO.

I like Britz's play yesterday, but why the hell did he not try to block the game tying field goal? It looked like he took a couple of those plays off, which is not like him.  (Maybe we need to give Hood a series or two.)

Kleinsorge had a very unlikeable game yesterday. I hope Stiverson is back for OSU; could Johnson move over and take Kleinsorge's spot?  I think Johnson has been pretty ok.

D-Line looked incredible once they buckled down.
Donnie Starks started to show flashes.
Burton played well.

Dislikes:

Missing Dante. Nate Jackson can't fill his shoes. Kendal Adams can't fill Nate Jackson shoes.
Hubs like of wiggle, he can't really run the ball.

Wildcat should only be used when we have a QB who can kind of do receiver-ish things and a RB who can kind of do QB-ish things and you can break a normal-personnel huddle mid-drive w/your QB splitting out and you RB behind center and freak the defense out for a play.
