hey not sure where to put this, but wanted to compare some "stats"

I have Cox internet (not the highest speed available, but one of the mid-tier ones), I have an airport extreme and a motorolla surfboard sb6121.

I just upgraded to the airport extreme, should I upgrade to a 3.0 surfboard?

58 Mbps d/l
5.96 Mbps u/l

Cox doesn't need a docis 3.0 until like 40ish mbs or something. I had the 50 plan with (I think) the same modem and got high 30's speed and they told me that's about where 2.0 tops out.

So it sounds like you're doing fine relative to your plan. Really up to you.

If you want a 3.0 modem, I just bought one and then 2 weeks later google fiber became available and I'm getting it installed this week (and won't need the modem anymore)

depends. if it's an 802.11n model, yes you can use it to extend the network. if it's an 802.11b model, you can attach it to the network (for airplay and junk) but not extend.

if you get a new router don't get a linksys. they used to be pretty good but are straight junk now. netgear is the only way to go right now.
