For the money.  They would get more TV money from the Big Ten Network than their NBC deal.

SERIOUS POST:

I am actually somewhat optimistic that Texas does not want to leave without a "Godfather" deal.  They want their tv channel.  They want to keep their rivalries, they don't want to upset the beltbuckles.  Just stay tuned folks.

losing nubb & cu/missouri and getting memphis / arkansas  :excited:
Why in God's name would Arkansas leave the SEC?  That would be like us leaving the Big XII to go to the WAC.

IF . . . it would help the Big 12 land a better TV deal, and the conference were aligned in such a way so as to make it easier for Arkansas to get to the CCG and a shot at a BCS bowl IMO they would be interested.  IF the TV dollars were there.

Arkansas hasn't been to one of the current BCS bowls in 30 years.

Therein lies the rub.  Arkansas can sit back and bask in the BCS bowl and TV money (which is much much more than the Big XII would provide) without every getting any better than average at football.  Going to  BCS game even every five years would not make up that difference in money.  No its better for Arkansas to sit back and let the big boys of the SEC feed it.

Chin . . . that's a fine point, but ultimately it starts to grind on fans, who then grind on AD's and Coaches.   Why do you think Houston Nutt left . . . because Ole Miss was a better job??  He left because he got himself tangled up in a little "off the field" activity and because Hog fans were pissed that he couldn't win an SEC championship and get them into a BCS bowl.   Why do you think the heat is on the Ol Ball Coach at South Carolina . . . those fans are also tired of never doing anything significant.

Imagine being a South Carolina fan right now, you've had Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier and you STILL can't get to a BCS bowl game, you can't even get to a SEC title game.

Castiglione subdued, but says the Big 12 is not dead just yet

by: DAVE SITTLER World Sports Columnist
Thursday, June 10, 2010

OKLAHOMA ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Joe Castiglione didn't try to mask his emotions Wednesday night when he acknowledged Nebraska most likely will announce by Friday that it's leaving the Big 12 for the Big Ten.

"I think it's over with them (Cornhuskers)," a dour Castiglione said in a late-night telephone interview. "It feels like somebody died.

"It's that emotional for so many people who put so much into creating the Big 12."

Castiglione was one of the league's architects when the Big 12 started forming in 1994. He was Missouri's athletic director when the Big Eight Conference morphed into the Big 12 ? starting competition in 1996 ? with four Texas schools.

OU's AD since mid-1998, Castiglione isn't ready to declare that the obviously serious blow in losing the Cornhuskers absolutely means the Big 12 is dead. Several media outlets have already speculated that without Nebraska's powerhouse football program and national reputation that the Big 12 can't survive.

"I'm not one of those people," Castiglione said. "I still think the Big 12 can be a viable league with 11 teams, and perhaps even 10."

Speculation remains that Missouri still might get the Big Ten invitation that Tiger officials were so self-assured about for the past few months. And rumors persist that Colorado finally will make the long-rumored jump to the Pac-10.

If the Big 12 dissolves, the Pac-10 also looks like the destination for OU, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.

Baylor and Colorado continue intense talks in behind the scenes meetings, but not with each other. They are jostling for the final spot if the Pac-10 expands to a 16-team league.

Castiglione acknowledged that BYU and Air Force are two teams the Big 12 might look at if it can convince Texas to help hold the conference together.

While Castiglione also confirmed that the Southeastern Conference has shown interest in the Sooners, OU's position is that it's going to stick with Texas wherever the Longhorns go because of the long history between the two schools.

"I think it would be a horrendous decision for OU and Texas to break up," Castiglione said. "We're going to stick together if it's at all possible."

Castiglione said he expected Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe to release a statement immediately after Nebraska's departure becomes official. Beebe, Castiglione and Texas AD DeLoss Dodds apparently remain unified in their desire to save the Big 12.

But what if the Pac-10 comes calling in the next few days with a very lucrative offer for OU to join what could be college football's first super conference?

"I don't know what would happen at this point. We just have to wait and see," Castiglione said.

One key factor that OU and Texas reportedly are worried about is the power they will lose in a 16-team super conference. Each will be just one of 16 votes instead of 12.

And then there's the natural factor that the current schools in the Pac-10 will remain loyal to each other and will have the numbers to win every vote over the six new members from the Big 12.

"If people thought they had culture problems in the Big 12 (Nebraska AD Tom Osborne felt that way)," said Castiglione, "how are the (Big 12) schools going to feel if they go to the Pac-10? We don't know."

The power Texas stands to lose in an expanded Pac-10 has to be reason enough for the Longhorns to continue to seek ways to make sure the Big 12 doesn't disband.

"We worked really hard (with Nebraska) to try and make this work," a subdued Castiglione said. "But it apparently wasn't enough."

Bet your bottom dollar that ku is lobbying hard to displace Baylor or Colorado in this move.

Yep.  KU is working hard for us (them) right now.

Who is having the best day: The Big East. Yes, the Big East. With Nebraska seemingly headed to the Big Ten, that hastens the breakup of the Big 12. Where do the castoffs end up? Try the mortally wounded Big East. Think of a nine-team Big East that would include Connecticut, Louisville, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Kansas, Kansas State, Baylor and Iowa State. Is this a BCA league or not? With the collapse of the Big 12 taking away a BCS spot, how could it not be?

Sign me up, Dax.

Even potentially without Syracuse, that will still be the best bball league in the land with with G-Town, Nova and St. Johns in the mix and the addition of ku/k-state.  If Big 10 pawns Missouri actually don't get the invite, we've got a regional geographic pod between the 5 Big XII cast offs in football.

That league could be salty.

Annual Big East basketball tournanment-PAK at the Garden!  Yes please.

honest to god though. that would require kstate, ku, iowa state and baylor getting together and coming up with some sort of smart plan or something. does anybody honestly see this happening? be honest with yourselves.

Potential Eastern member fans of that league bitching about travel costs.   That's relative . . . Austin, Tx to Pullman, WA . . . that's a travel cost issue.  Pittsburgh or Cinncy to Kansas City . . . that's not a travel cost issue . . .

Cinncy to Storrs, CT . . . that's almost 800 miles.  Cinncy to MHK . . . 712 miles.  It's practically the same distances for somebody like Louisville.

Hell, thanks to our new mega Elite Chicago route, you can leave CVG (Cinn-Northern Kentucky) at 4 pm, and be in Manhattan by 8:50 pm.

Editors Note: This post was removed.  The amount of people and places taking this thing WAY TOO seriously was getting a little out of control.  At this point there is no truly credible source that has said anything at all about Kansas to the SEC.  I would love for it to be true, but it just shouldn't be out there and taken as fact.  Sorry Doc...for now, we'll just have to wait and see.
