The GOR is different.  You sign your rights over to the conference.  They don't have to give them back.  It's not a buyout.  You signed over your rights to TV over to the conference.

So, if OU or Texas wanted to leave, that's fine, but they just wouldn't be on TV for the next six years.

It's more than money, but it's an absurd amount of money.  It would be like us leaving for no TV and setting over 12 million dollars on fire every year.

My impression is still that the lawyers would get involved, since this is how our society works.  Once that happens, negotiation begins.  Nothing is ironclad.
yeah, I have wondered about how enforceable the GOR actually is, kinda reminds me of the KSU/WIBW infinite radio rights deal

This still doesn't address CyberToothCat's concern (which I share the same, but I'm not a lawyer).  The concern is that if enough schools decide to leave at once, they can simply vote to dissolve the conference, therefore there is no legal entity that now owns their rights.  I would think at that point the schools could then do some legal action that results in a judge deciding that since that the legal entity that owned their rights no longer exists then their rights revert back to them.

Edit: I'm not worried this would actually happen, but rather worried that IF the schools decide to break-up the Big12 this is possible.

We're getting into extremely theoretical territory that has almost no chance of happening.

And ku

AAU institution.  Pac 12 wanted us (academically and basketball), remember?

At no point, ever, was KU a consideration for the PAC-12 without OU and OSU already going ahead of them.  Remember?

And also, "Pac 12 wanted us" is just ridiculous delusion.  The Pac 12 didn't want you.  The Pac 12 plane was in Lawrence for 3 hours as the plans for the teams to the south going started to fall apart.  That does not constitute "Pac 12 wanted us".

Incorrect.  Pac 12 wanted to substitute KU for OSU at the 11th hour, which made OU and Texas uncomfortable, and ultimately led to the Big 12 sticking together.  Just because you don't want to believe it doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Pretty sure KU is ranked somewhere around 120th best universities in the naiton and KSU is around 130th. You're Sugar calling the paper white.
At least KSU is renowned for what we teach and research. If you want to learn about agriculture or engineering you go to KSU. if you want to be a lawyer or doctor, KU isnt even in the first 10 schools i would go to.

KU's tied for 101st, while K-State is tied for 143rd (behind Oklahoma State).

I heard the opposite.  Sorry, I know it is tough to admit ku had no options of any kind.

Good lord, how many more insurance salespersons and retail clerks does Johnson County need?  If it's a lot, we should invest more heavily in JCCC and KU.

I agree that it has very, very little chance of happening.  Just saying that it is possible for schools to leave the Big12 without having their rights locked up for 6 years elsewhere.  If there is another push for a mass exodus, at that point the GOR wouldn't be a deterent at all.  Just pointing out that there is still an available out from the GOR.  I agree that it won't happen though, I can't imagine any scenario where out of KSU, KU, ISU, WVU, TCU, and Baylor that 3 of those 6 would vote to dissolve.

This is pretty ridiculous story to be based on a plane landing in Lawrence.  Now, not only did the Pac 12 want KU, but KU saved the conference!

Yeah, why would they want to join a legitimate football conference and make a ton of money when they could stay with their perfectly shitty deal in the ACC? They just added juggernauts in Syracuse and Pitt, after all.

Good point. I was comparing them to the juggernauts we are going to add, though. Miami, Clemson, and FSU! Keep the faith. :crossfingers:

Look at it in terms of existing juggernauts (OU, Texas) as opposed to the power in the conference being skewed to football non-juggernauts (UNC, Duke).
