so apparently the Big East has a Dan Beebe of their own, except without the whole "saving your conference at the 11th hour" part

Folks, John Marinatto found out Syracuse and Pitt applied to the ACC while sitting in the pressbox at Maryland. Think about that.
If this goes bad, we must merge with the Big East. We have to do whatever is possible to keep a solvent conference for Notre Dame alive. Otherwise, the Big Ten will expand, and it will be bad for us if Mizzou goes to the SEC.
The absolute best case scenario for the Big East at this point is to get KU/KSU/BU/ISU. Maybe UCF. Hell, they were looking at having VILLANOVA upgrade last year. There's a reason all those schools want out. It's arguably less stable than our clusterfuck at this point, so I'm thinking that a merger is becoming less and less likely. WVU is about to get picked off by the SEC (depending on who you believe), and UCONN and Rutgers might as well just get on their knees and start sucking Swofford off. You can't keep a viable BCS football conference together with Louisville, Cincy, USF, UCF, emaw, KU (maybe), ISU, Baylor, TCU and maybe ECU.
War's over, man. Swofford dropped the big one.
