Because that's incredibly impractical. 33% of Americans do not have high speed internet, 17% of Americans have no access to broadband technology at all. Only 15% of Americans consider themselves cord cutters. You are absolutely losing a hell of a lot more than you gain by making ESPN a streaming only option.

It's Clay Travis, but the point is largely true. ESPN isn't going to fold, most likely, but it's going to have to pay less for rights fees, and it's going to have to transition to a more cord-cutter friendly format to augment its current model.

WatchESPN is a fantastic app. They could quickly and easily roll that out to a standalone subscription model as soon as it's capable of doing so based on their current agreements. However, they'll have to cross that tipping point where doing so doesn't anger the cable companies that are relying on them as their tent pole for subscribers.

Hell, once ESPN goes standalone, like HBO, people are going to come off in droves. Fox will be forced to react, so there will be nothing left to keep people on cable unless they're really in love with CNN and Fox News.

Also, I'd keep an eye on the new administration's direction for the FCC on Net Neutrality. A lot of these companies like Time Warner, Comcast, etc. may strike up sweetheart deals so that you get faster speeds for the apps if you're a cable subscriber. Similar to what they did when they slowed down streaming speeds to Netflix before a lot of the hubbub before.

From what I've read, the Trump administration will decrease regulations regarding net neutrality giving the providers more leverage to screw around with stuff like this and not tell us about it.

The operating systems inside of the boxes that will play your apps (i.e. Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, etc.) will probably be able to eventually sort a lot of that out for you.

Roku already has something kind of like it in their system today. You search what you want to watch, and it will find the app that has it and if you need to pay for it or if the service streams it for free.

For example, if you wanted to watch a movie, you search for it on Roku, then it will tell you if Netflix has it for free or if Vudu will charge you $1.99 to watch it.

Flipping around to multiple games on a Saturday afternoon is one of my life's great pleasures and cable/sat is the best way to do it. I guess you could come somewhat close to replicating that with 3 or 4 streaming devices but it would still be janky.

Cable is worth it just for the convenience and consistent quality of picture.

Blame me for cable companies being able to price gouge. I don't care, I'll pay.

Totally agree on the picture quality for Direct TV, TimeWarner, Comcast and AT&T are actually worse than a WatchESPN stream imo. If you are willing and able to shop various providers you an keep it under $100/mo pretty easily, that is worth it to me from August to May.
