And the prospect of eventually adding ACC schools doesn't change anything for me. Like, what's the real difference between a 20 team conference and a 24 team one?

I mostly agree, but I'd like to think BY has a strategic plan that's focused on a number (20, 24, etc.)

He says publicly that he does not have a plan for a particular number but does have one for stretching coast to coast.

I know I'm dumb, but why the boner for coast-to-coast? Do fans refuse to go to games or shut off the TV on Saturday evening because they have to get up for early church the next morning. Can't MDT/MST schools schedule their game an hour later for TV?

I think the underlying rationale is the same as it is for adding more teams: growth for the sake of growth. Which is pretty dumb imo.

I really wish we were only adding Arizona and Utah.

Colorado had $95 million in revenue in 2022 - $21 million behind Utah, $26 million behind ASU, $29 million behind Arizona. And, even $5 million behind lowly K-State. In fact, if you were to add the revenue the other new teams would have gotten if they had been in the Big 12 last year, CU would have the lowest revenue of any of the public schools in the new Big 12.

Isn't some of the difference between the zona schools and Colorado that they have way more athletic programs? Also the zona schools contribute quite a bit more to the AD through student fees than CU does.

Arizona is $100 per semester per student, ASU is $75 per semester and CU is $30 per semester. In terms of revenue, I imagine those Olympic sports - at best - are breaking even or generating a small amount of revenue. Certainly not enough to account for a huge difference. Most are significant net losses.

As a good comparative barometer, Nebraska volleyball - which just broke the world record for having 92,000+ fans witness a women's athletic event - generates about $2-3 million in revenue each year (and nets around $250k-$500k - partially because they pay their coach $750k per year). They average about 8,000 fans per game playing in the old b-ball arena. Point of all this being that even programs that you think might drive a fair bit of revenue (like UConn women's b-ball, Nebraska v-ball, etc.) are still waaaaay far behind football and men's b-ball.

The Pac 12 does sponsor a ton of sports but they only have full participation in the sports you'd expect
Men's & Women's basketball
Football
Women's Soccer.
Women's Cross Country
Men's Golf
Women's Soccer
Volleyball

What's crazy is that the Pac 12 doesn't sponsor indoor track.

I don't think any of those schools carry a crazy amount of sports and as I'm sure y'all know, eliminating sports has title ix implications so it has to be strategic. I think schools like K-State, who only carry the minimum amount of sports, are the outlier. I'm pretty sure we were the only school in both Big 12 v1.0 and v2.0 that carried the minimum number, not sure about v3.0. BYU definitely doesn't carry the minimum, I'm guessing UCF doesn't either, no idea about Houston and Cincinnati.

That being said Stanford attempted to cut sports a couple of years ago but s couple of alumni kicked some money in and saved them.

According to Thamel SMU is only foregoing the media part so they are still dilutive to March Madness, CFP and Bowl money.
