FARM UPDATE

Lil lil is worn out, All day outside yesterday.  After an hour of calling and extensive searching she appeared from North of the house at sunset.

All hosed drained and stored.  Garden mowed.  Marigold seeds collected.  Bee hives protected with bales.  Bees given surgar water for extra food.  Working on trespass and no hunting signs.  Purple paint on poles, posts - no hunting markers.  Rita's milo cut.  Ours cutting yesterday and today.  Limbs collected, piled.  Cleaning up house clutter.  Worked on hot water heater - limited success.  First hot shower in a long time on farm.  :)  Cat count 5 (maybe 6).

Also need clarification from some real farm people who can explain "Milo" vs "Sorghum"?

Ive always heard it called Milo, as in "We are growing Milo in that field this year" but it seems like Sorghum is the name the grain is sold as.

It’s the same thing. I think there are other types of sorghum or some crap but milo is the grain type. Other types are mostly stalks and you chop the crap out of it and feed it to cows. And you just let it sit and rot and stink up the entire place in ensilage pits. It’s gross out city. And you scoop it up with a tractor and dump it in a feed truck and then it barfs it out to the cows and they just go to town on it. You can smell it a mile away. I hate its guts.

i've only ever heard it called milo in kansas, everywhere else it's just sorghum.  and i love the smell of sorghum ensilage (silage everywhere but kansas).

Sugar aphids ruined milo in my dad's farm. Haven't grown it for a few years. I like the smell. Kinda reminds me of hydraulic oil but a little sweeter!

It was milo until Principles of Crop Science my freshman year.  Stan Ehler best motivational quote of my college career after half class failed  the first test.

"Some of you need to study more and apply yourselves otherwise you can look forward to a career as the tire changer back at your local Farmers Coop."

That pile of hay can support MAYBE 2 barn cats at most, fill up that whole back area with hay up to the rafters and then we are talking.

FTR, I have horses and that's not even enough for one horse more or less for a hay loving cat.  ;)

The tried and true hay bale to cat ratio is at least 20 square bales per cat.

Flew out to Vegas this morning and went right over the farm. Gawd, we were so close to being wind farm barons.

In other news while I was in Vegas I pretended that farming was my profession for a day.

"Yeah, name is ben ji from western kansas, harvest is over so im blowing off some steam and cashing in my trump money"

Thanks to this thread I know just enough about farming to be dangerous.
