speaking of Friesen Machine, Friesen was one of the dominant german mennonite names in town. Friesen, Reimer, & Issac were the big 3. I probably knew about 500 people with one of those three last names. pretty great people generally. not that a last name makes you a nice person, they just happened to be nice. other than the owner of Friesen Machine, he as a well known grouchy bad person. made really good hydraulic lines though. didn't like you talking to him while he made them though. which was fine with me, I'm over here enjoying my doctor pepper.

another thing that ruled in Meade was I didn't pay for anything. we just had a charge account to our ranch and all the places in town knew it and just gave me whatever I wanted. Corner Auto Parts, Ace Hardware, the Co-op Farm Store, Meade Lumber, NAPA, Friesen Machine, Alley Oil (full service fuel! I'd just pull up and some HS kid would fill me up and wave at me when it was full!.....FARM USE ONLY NOT FOR PERSONAL VEHICLE ENJOYMENT!!!), Bob's Drive In, a bunch more I can't think of right now.

obviously we have our own diesel and gas tanks at the headquarters (where our house, shops, vet shed, cattle chutes, a bunch of our cattle pens and our feedlot, grain bins and scale, most of our equipment was kept) but that was a few miles north of town and most of our ground is south of town so I'd fuel up in town a lot. we had diesel trailers we'd haul to fields for me to fill up tractors at but no gas. had to go to town or the HQ for gas.

also if nobody was around sometimes my own vehicle would mysteriously get filled with gas at our home tanks. we'll never know how or why and it's best if we don't think about it too much.

Got around 30 out at the cat ranch over 2 days... basically walking around the windbreak in the morning and blasting the birds that come out and ones sitting on the top of dead trees.

After about noon it gets pretty hot and the birds are less active.

elite posting in this thread you guys.

brings back memories of a Pepsi machine in the local full service gas station / farm tire store that dispensed glass bottles (probably went away around 1988)

nice woodpile, ben ji. I would get a farm or property just to have an excuse to cut up wood and organize stacks of firewood.

I usually just do the bacon wrapped poppers with them but decided to roast some in the oven tonight. At the cat ranch so the seasonings were limited to salt pepper and butter.

Pretty good.

I sit in front of a computer all day talking on the phone/sending emails/looking at excel/etc. It's a nice break to go and actually do something physical where you see a tree standing, cut it down, cut it into pieces and stack it.

Randomly found this book at my local JoCo library and am about halfway through it, basically a history book on Western KS. Pretty damn good.

Same author has one called "west of Wichita" which covers western KS from 1865-1890.

This is how chapter 4 of "West of Wichita" starts.

"To understand the initial impressions of the climate and prospects of western Kannsas, it should be remembered that Coronado had someone strangle the guide who led him there. "

Love to eat dove.  Usually wrapped in bacon with some jalapeno in it.  Unfortunately, it takes a lot of the little suckers to make a meal.  Fortunately, I'm very good at hunting them.

it has to be pretty hard to hunt a bird that won’t move out of the way until you’re almost stepping on them.

Made it to the cat ranch to kill some doves and the cat rancher has identified a kitten in need of help. It's spent the last two days in the house getting fed through a dropper and eye washes to clear up the puss/gunk on the eyes.

"lil Yella" is still alive and getting fed a good diet of whole milk and egg yolks from an eye dropper.

When I got there my dad had just found it in the garage next to a dead sibling and it's eyes were crusted over. Apparently the remedy for that is to put a wet washcloth over it eyes for about 30 minutes then slowly wipe away all the gunk.

Took a couple of days but lil Yella can now open it's eyes.

Here is a picture of it resting on the cat ranchers belly last night in a homemade diaper (apparently when you feed them they crap, cat ranch lesson learned the hard way)
