Pretty sure the cat ranch is just going to fallow all their fields over the summer and hope for some moisture before planting winter wheat next fall.....At least that was the plan until my dad got his phat government insurance check for the zero'd out milo.

Heading out there this weekend to see if there are any birds left to hunt during pheasant season.

Not to pit this up, but here's a very interesting website where you can see who got what farm payments in your area over the past several years:

Ben ji's dad was super excited when I showed him he showed up on this list the first time for like 1k for some of those trump/china trade war checks. Seeing his name along with all the big time Thomas county farmers made him feel like he was had made it.

Crop insurance payments do not show up there though (even though the insurance is 60% subsidized by taxpayers), just direct payments.

No clouds tonight so the sunset was subpar. Took a look at the zero'd out Milo fields and it's all about knee high with maybe 1/5 plants heading out.

Planning to walk Milo through them tomorrow to see if there are any birds out here after the drought.

He could bale the crop and sell the bales to dairy farmers.   :dunno:
Hot time in Kat town tonight.

Saw my first IRL rattler this evening when I was walking the mutts through the CRP. It was about 10ft to my left when it started making noise.

Walked past it thinking it was some horny grasshoppers but it kept on rattling so I took a look.

Walked through the zero'd Milo crop today, this was some of the better looking part but it was only knee high and not fully headed.

Wowzers!  That rough rider is all coiled up and ready to go!    :ohno:

I came across one on a hike (solo) in Arizona last spring just like that in just about the same manner.  Didn't see it until after I walked right past it (within striking distance).  Got the ol' heart rate elevated that's for sure!

Glad the 'ji pups didn't tangle with that bastard. My dad has had two dogs bit by rattlers out on the hobby farm. Both survived, one barely though.

They were blissfully unaware.

Do you know what the wound looked like? When I was out there over memorial day weekend I let the mutts out to run around when I was unloading the car. Milo came back limping and wouldn't put any weight on one of her front paws the whole weekend which was kind of swollen.

I thought she had just sprained an ankle or something, no outwards signs of being sick, just lazy/lethargic. When I got back to KC this wound popped up so I took her to the vet and there were like "Dunno but here are some antibiotics and anti inflammatory meds"

The only thing I can think of was she got bit by some sort of snake but they didn't pump her full of venom.

My parents are currently on a cruise and keep emailing me pictures so I emailed a pic of the rattler to my dad...he took the picture, sent it out to my family chain email saying

"Ben ji found this one in the CRP.  Just be aware snakes are on the farm - "do not kill them".
There is a "Green Smooth" snake living in the fireplace ash pit.  It is not venomous.  Just be aware - do not kill it.

I will look for some rattler warning signs to post around the property.  Good deterrent for trespassers."

Can't wait to see the "DANGER, RATTLESNAKE AROUND" signs he puts up.

nice rattlesnake.  your dog's paw does not look like a snakebite.

it looks to me like she might have a thorn or a grass seed or something in there that has worked it's way into the flesh and is a little infected.

One was about 8 when it happened, the other around 1. Both caught on the lip. The older one had his whole face swole up and had to be given anti-venom and stay in the hospital for almost a week. Afterwards he had very thick scar tissue where he was bit.

The younger took it it like a champ and just needed rest at home for a few days. His lip was a little swollen and he was lethargic but the vet wasn't worried about it at all. After a week you couldn't even tell it had happened.

When rattlers try to bite, I just use my greaves and gauntlets to ward off the attack before cracking a knee and then breaking a neck. Works every time.

So I have this super heavy work bench that I added heavy casters that allow you to move it easily then flip the casters up so the bench can sit firmly on its legs while being used.
