Those are the risers where the water drains to the underground pipe that takes it to the creek. The terraces run north to south on ground sloping to the east. The water drains to 4 runs of pipe running east downhill to take excess water off the field.
Some of K-States finest agronomy majors and ag engineers do the math for most farmers via FSA or SCS office to build terrace and drain tile systems to preserve top soil from run off.
We replaced this system a decade ago. My dad tiled this farm in the 80s.
Even the best design terrace encounters rain events it wasn't built to handle so a little up keep filling ruts or cleaning sediment away from the risers is just good practice.
