Combine fire in Osage County this evening.  Guy jumped off and broke his leg to add insult to injury.

That sucks. Is it just me, or are there more combine fires these days? Is soybean dust more flammable than other dusts? Saw a large red machine that had burned along K-9 near Concordia a few weeks ago. Really bad day for someone.

man, great looking turnips.  turnips are such a great fruit, shame they're overshadowed by the potato.

Amazing beaver dam. Beavers are just incredible. How are they just born with the software for building dams???

Looked at it closer today.  Found their Lodge further upstream. Half on the bank, half on the creek.  The dam is a woven thicket of limbs, corn stalks, trees.  As the water rose they used growing trees on the bank as piers and packed stuff behind them to extend and support it.

Beaver have been on this creek going back to my youth...

I convinced my dad to stop mowing alot of the area around the farm to make it better pheasant hunting habitat and it worked. Straight ahead is the old chicken coop and to the right/behind it is overgrown with weeds that I flushed a couple pheasants from.

Also the cattle pens are all overgrown with weeds since there were no cows this year and I found some pheasant in there. Selfishly I don't want him to lease out the remaining pasture so that it stays primo pheasant hunting area for me.

You can tell there is some recently broken out land there. Used to be about a 5 acre triangle of grass at the edge of the irrigated circle that my uncle would stack hay bales on. This year it was overgrown with weeds and I was super excited to hunt it but when I got out there it had just been broken out .

I asked my dad about it and the guy who farms our land had his equipment out there already so he figured he might as well do it now.

Bumped a metric ton of deer from weedy areas and the windbreak. Milo didn't chase this one because I was there to tell here to leave it alone.

A different time we were hunting a newish windbreak (tree's as tall as me) and I bumped a deer. Milo was on the other side of the trees and didn't hear me tell her to leave it and ended up chasing it for about 1/4 mile before giving up and trotting back with a stupid smile on her face.

Tell me more about the turnips as cover crops. Did you plant them after the wheat harvest or corn harvest? I would guess wheat but I have no idea how long it takes turnips to grow.

Do you feed the turnips to the cows?
