well, if it makes you feel better I have climbed onto the old 54 bridge many times. you can't tell from the overhead shot but the ends aren't connected to the ground. like you have to climb up some stuff to get on it. also, it was a well known location for old sponge brained townies as where the druggies, devil worshipers, and hobos hang out. also it's really high off the ground. like probably 20 feet. also near there is a big bridge for the train tracks you see in your picture which was also cool. SPOILER: there were no druggies, devil worshipers, or hobos there ever but if you wanted to be one of those things and have a cool AF place to hang out it would qualify as it is cool AF.

bridge update: you kansans are probably going to be off the hook for bridge maintenance for your entire lives within a week. in discussing this bridge I have discovered that some local photographer knows of it and has asked permission and had their clients senior pictures taken under it or next to it or something for years. apparently it's cool for that though I have no real recollection of it being cool looking. also, once we agree with the state the plan is to take a loader and knock it down and just make a giant pile of old bridge wood and parts for some reason OR see if some local dumbass wants to come take it down and remove it in exchange for them getting to keep all the bridge pieces and whatever.

me - "Why are you going to knock it down?"
dad - [some fantastical hypothetical where there is a giant washout and the bridge being old and wooden is washed down stream for like 8 miles to where the road crosses our property and the bridge somehow blocks the road and we would be responsible for then clearing the road]
me - ........
Some quick internet sleuthing reveals that there are only like 4 Bridges in SD farm county and one of them is listed as intact but closed to traffic since 1953....

Is this the beautiful wooden bridge?

also see to the north of the old bridge between it and the tracks where you can tell people drive? I once got a 1979 chevy blazer high centered there and had to borrow a buddies dirt bike to drive to my house and get another truck which I drove back down there to get the blazer unstuck, wherein my buddies (who were stuck down there with a high centered blazer and NO dirtbike) drove my blazer back to my house and I dropped off the other truck and we loaded the dirtbike in my unstuck blazer and then went to Bobs drive in where I purchased them food in thanks for the waiting around while I used their dirtbike.

Appreciate all the pics you added of the bridges in my county. Guessing you were very close to my family farm for a couple.

My dad always had some rationale for doing things that in his mind could be cited in court. Like, "yes, I took the $200,000, but you see this bridge came with EXPENSES."

I don’t think that’s a realistic solution in this dry ass country where the wind blows 30 mph 24/7/365

SD,

I have this friend that lives in Florida or something. His wife's grandparents have a farm that they have had for like 100 years. Not a big farm or anything, just some farm land in Florida or wherever and pasture. They pay someone to do farm stuff for them now. His in-laws want to keep it and pass it down to his family and kids. Problem. Farming is a pain in the ass and my friend in Florida has no interest in dealing with farming stuff. What should he do?

are his in-laws also about to die or something? if grandparents are still alive this seems like a problem to worry about 30 years from now.

and even then it seems like someone is doing all the farm stuff already, just have them keep doing it.

I wouldn’t trust anyone from THE BAY AREA when it comes to farming. Just my two cents there.

Diesel truck / pickup experts (we only had gas trucks back on the farm) - how long does a diesel pickup truck need to idle in the morning before you get in it to drive somewhere? My redneck neighbors will let their trucks idle for about 20 minutes before getting in them to drive to work (even when it isn't 20 below). It fills the block with diesel fumes which are fine I guess.

Like 30 seconds

hmm, i think it's more likely that they don't come with off buttons and are just left running 24/7.

Does the friends wife have any attachment to it?  Let the grandparents pass it down.  When they are gone then friend and wife have decisions to make.

Is it in a trust to avoid inheritance tax?  So many questions.  If they sell what's the cap gain?  1031 it into a DST or other like kind.   Maybe the grandkids would rather manage a jiffylube instead of a farm.

If the place is low maintenance and you have a good renter why not keep it.  Do they ever visit?  If it's an investment with no sentimental attachment or entertainment (fishing, hunting,.camping, pony rides) then perhaps it's best to sell.
