Does the pasture have good fence?  What kind of grass?

Fence is in good condition but I have no idea what kind of grass is out there, probably buffalo grass or whatever.

Your big farm neighbors have more equipment then barns?  Rent it to store equipment.  Farmers love to note their 2012 Case IH Axial Flow combine was stored in a shed when its time to sell it.

This is probably what will happen, let whoever leases the land keep tractor etc in the big barn as part of the lease.

sys, we are suitcase farmers. Only planning on breaking out around 1/4 of the pasture that is flat and has good soil.

2019 Avg rental rate for pasture in Thomas County - $18 per acre
2019 Avg rental rate for non irrigated cropland in Thomas County - $57

If it makes you feel any better my dad planted a bunch of clover all around the windbreaks/old pens for his bee's.  :dunno:

I can't imagine you'd get the average rental rate. I don't think it's worth it.

If your dad wants to make money he should sell it all and invest in the stock market. If he really wants to farm, put some cows of his own out there. If he wants sentimental value and something that connects with his sons, keep it as a golf course/cat ranch.

the family would get pretty attached to some cows, i bet.

some central california cows.  these are probably about as close as we get to real range cattle around this part of california.  all black, but i don't think they're more than half angus, at most.

Like, I think it’s natural to believe you can go into a tactical farming situation and do better than people who actually farm based on your never farmed before knowledge and strategy. But that’s an instinct you need to convince your dad to ignore.

Somebody on here got some CRP knowledge?  Enroll that grass in a program and let USDA pay dad to NOT farm it.  Is it hunting worthy with the wind breaks?  Probably get a little check from state as WIHA.

We looked in to CRP but it has to be cropland before it goes into crp.

Enough of this serious farm talk, here is my dad's most recent update.

Thought I saw a turkey.  Checked cam.  Racoon around.  Mama missing.  Kittens uncertain.  Trap set.  Another cam set.  Auto watering system working good.  Farm tomatoes big as OP tomatoes.  Ate kale, lettuce, spinach, radishes, buttercup lettuce with chicken tonight.

I'm very happy he was able to find white mama with the trail cam. I can only imagine the stress he would be under if he had to go a couple of days without confirming lil's mama was still alive.

So I just started watching the TV show Yellowstone and its pretty awesome. The basic setting is the Dutton Ranch which is outside of bozeman MT and the largest contiguous ranch in the country and take the law into their own hands. Very similar to Ozark but set in the mountains.

Anyways my question is about Livestock Association/Agents etc. In the show the patriarch of the family is also the Livestock Association Commissioner in MT or something and he can basically go busting down door and pew pew'n as long he he claims it has something to do with cattle.

Does KS have a similar livestock association like that? If someone steals your cows do you call them or the local sheriff?

https://www.ncba.org/

National lobby and industry group.  Funded by the $1 per head beef check off producers pay when cattle are sold.  Mandated by 1985 farm bill.

Famous for the "Beef, its whats for dinner" ad campaign.

Except for the time they named Cybill Shepard the national spokesperson and it came out she was trying to stay away from red meat.

State lobby and industry group.
Issues the cool KLA Eat Beef license plates.

Cattlemen group who are not fans of the check off.  Butted heads with NCBA in court over it.  Proponents of COOL "country of origin labeling"
