(Title of email was "Farm Kitty")

Living the dream.  AM Farm Kitty found a tall elm tree North West of the house.  Up she went very high.  She did NOT fall, did NOT need a vet visit.  In and out of the house 2 more times.  Spends afternoon napping then wants out around sunset - request always denied.  Tonight DWARFS vs MIDGETS ! ! !  I made the little guys some oatmeal cookies made with honey.

Farm mowed, 6 loads of limbs hauled, mower blades sharpened, fruit trees watered, solar lights placed, laptop factory reset (fixed), trail cams downloaded & batteries charged.  Cat count down to 9 total.  Littlest kitten sole litter survival cute - grey with long stripes (front to back).

Stile need to haul pooh for fruit trees, reclaim garden & fertilize w/pooh, haul 30 loads of tree limbs, prune & treat fruit trees, fence off fruit trees from deer, put out 2 more trail cams for security monitoring.

Grey momma cat comes 2x a day to house to escort me to Morton to feed the barn cats.

Dunno yet but my guess is too short to actually keep deer out, probably 3 ft high chicken wire attached to steel posts.

I asked my dad how the wrestlers liked their cookies and got some pointers on how to feed the barn cats as well.

Oatmeal cookies went to the Dwarfs and Midgets.  Before the event I asked Dallas if he'd gotten one of the oatmeal cookies.  He said, "YES !  I ate three.  They were really good !".  The farm cats usually get frshmade pancakes cut up w/scrambled eggs and milk.  An extra is to mix in some canned cat food with it.  Always some plain milk for small kittens as well.

Before he heads out to the farm he will stop by Aldis and buy 18 packs of eggs for like 87 cents to feed the cats with. Will sometimes get them hot dogs too if they are on sale.

These god damn barn cats eat better than 99% of housecats.

Throw back to when one of our farm dogs ate an entire package of raw bacon and died

Random cow pix today at the farm.  Grass is amazing this year with all the rain.

That silo is at the other farm.  This was the home place where dad started,  but the silo is the only thing that remains.  Hasn't been used in 30 years.

Anyone have any experience converting pastureland into CRP? Most land that is put into CRP is old cropland so my dad just assumed he couldn't put the pasture into CRP but I started doing some research and that may not be the case.

https://www.nrcs.usda.gov/wps/portal/nrcs/detail/ks/programs/?cid=nrcseprd1410561

There is a CRP program called "Riparian Buffer" that I'm sure the "Creek" in our pasture would qualify for.

We also have some wallows/playa lakes in the pasture that might qualify for the "Non-Floodplain Wetland Restoration" or "Marginal Pastureland Wetland Buffer".

He said he would talk to the local FSA rep this week so hopefully we get some more details on the feasibility.

I'm really just looking for ways to prevent him from attempting to raise goats or some other hair brained scheme out there when my uncles lease is up in a couple years.

The FSA rep is the one who will submit all the paperwork and perform the evaluation, and depending on how good they are at their job be able to find a program that the land might be eligible for. Since it's established pasture, your land will only be eligible for certain programs and only if your pasture meets the definition of "marginal" (usually has to deal with the soil type but also historic crop yield records if available).

Keep in mind that all those programs have sign-up periods based on available funding and supposedly the next CRP is opening up at the end of this year/early next.

My dad met with the local FSA rep today and they said no go on the "creek" in the pasture but the playa's were a possibility.

My uncle still has the lease until 2021 so we have another year to figure out if the playa's qualify etc.

Couple new email updates from the farm....

I notice a dozen beautiful monarch butterflies flying above the East lawn protected by the trees.  Watching lil I saw where about 30 were parked on leaves within a 2 ft area.  You would barely notice them except when a new one came in - then all around would open their wings displaying the festive orange and black colors.  All together there wer around 150.

I am starting to see the black caterpillars on the roads now.

Anyone else from WKS cousins with like half the county?

My dad will always claim that we are cousins with everybody and normally we just say, yeah sure whatever.....Our most prominent "cousins" own a ton of land out by our farm, big time land barons. We are related through our great grandmothers who were sisters but I have never met any of them.

Anyways our big time land baron "Cousin" was in Topeka for a meeting that my sister was also attending. She was joking around and asked me if she should introduce herself as his cousin at the meeting. I told her to go with WKS neighbor since I doubt he knows that we are "Cousins"

Ben Ji's Sister - "Hello, my name is ben ji's sister and I wanted to introduce myself. We have some land out by yours in WKS and you might know ben ji's dad or ben ji's uncle"

Big Time Land Baron Cousins "Oh I know who your uncle is....did you know we are cousins? Not like cousins cousins but 3x removed I think. I think my great grandma was born on your farm?" (She was)

Feedlot for wintering calves needed some attention.  So #1 son and I knocked out rebuilding base for feedbunks today.

Cousin didn't think we could do it in a day.  Pffft.

Not from WKS, but from EKS between Topeka and Wichita.  While my last name is one of 4 or 5 prominent names in my small hometown, I wasn't ever closely related to anyone (besides my grandmother).  My dad had 2 first cousins in town and their kids were my 2nd cousins.  That was about it.  My aunt's and uncles all moved away.  Now, my grandfather had something around 60-70 first cousins in town(2 of his uncles had like 20 kids apiece).  The majority of them stayed and intermarried with all the other prominent names in town.  I jokingly said to my dad once that we were, in some way, related to 80% of the town.  He said, "at least."

To the point, after a DNA test, the dad of a good friend and roommate of mine in KC showed up as a relative.  His grandma was from my hometown and a cousin to my grandpa.  We jokingly call each other cousin now.

Hmm.  And i'm not saying you are wrong, but I define East/West lines on football classification (east vs. west) and whether you went to Kansas City or Wichita to go shopping, etc...  my old high school was definitely in the east (usually southeast) for football, and we would go to Kansas City not Wichita.  (really close to being equidistant from outer edges of Wichita and Olathe).  Or in other words, the flint hills were always my east/west dividing line.  I grew up on the eastern side of the flint hills and almost never traveled west of them.

Do you always power rank your sons? If the other one gets you a good birthday present do you update the rankings and put him at #1?
