What does decriminalize mean?  You get caught with an amount under a threshold you just pay a fine like a parking ticket?

Pretty much.

Seems like a waste of time

In this current political climate, anything the house does is a waste of time.

Lol, no. Where are these federal police officers that apparently go around arresting people for small amounts of marijuana? This law would still leave it up to the states.

States set their drinking age too. The feds just have incentives to set it at 21

Yes that’s the point, seems likely a decriminalizing at federal level would follow suit

The issue/problem is there was never a question whether the federal government can or should regulate the drinking age, but they already stepped all over states’ toes in the marijuana department. What has always needed to happen is for the feds to erase any marijuana possession laws off the books.

LOL, I think I would know. My wife’s cousin is a divorce attorney in Forney.

One or both of us is confused, here. The question was what does "decriminalize" means in *this* context. I agree with you that decriminalize at the local level often means what you said. But here we're talking about federal law.

FWIW, people get busted with small amounts of marijuana in national parks/forest all the time. You’re not wrong that decriminalizing personal amounts at the fed level would have relatively limited pragmatic effect, but the very symbol of that would be substantial and carry with it important conversations about criminality and restorative justice. It would also open up the doors to possible banking regulations and federal taxation.

Oh I don’t think anyone disputes it would be hugely beneficial if for no other reason than universities could actually study it without worrying about being arbitrarily cracked down upon. The federal regulations continue to be completely bananas, and (in my opinion) a shining example of congressional overreach through the commerce clause.

I think the pattern has been medicinal to recreational pretty quickly. I fully expect Kansas to be one of the last 5 states to do it.

I feel the same about Texas. Somehow, Oklahoma got it done, which doesn't make sense to me. Even if the feds deschedule it, will states like Texas continue to criminalize it? Seems so weird to me.

Oklahoma got it done by putting it on a ballot to the general public. Any state would be able to pass it that way.

I don't know if Texas could get it passed that way.  There are cities around here that on the regular vote down liquor sales in their city.
