Chromecast
« on: August 18, 2014, 09:04:59 PM »
Dudes!  I'm down in Houston and am trying to find a way to watch the first game on TV.  I have a Google Chromecast thing that I use for netflix and stuff all the time from my iPad.  Is it possible to chromecast from KstateHDTV?  Can it be ran from an iPad?  Have any of you done it before?

Thanks

I'm going to guess that KStateHDTV doesn't support chromecast. Do any of your computers have an HDMI output?

My laptop does.  So I can just tune into the game on my laptop and plug the HDMI cord between it and my TV?  Will it work instantly as long as I can find the correct input on my TV?

It would be legit if you could chromecast that thing though....Currie needs to get on that

True, but I haven't had much success using it that way. The chromecast tends to crash when I attempt to stream video from the browser.

a Roku channel seems to me as the obvious answer but I assume there is some legal type reason keeping them from doing it.  BYUtv has had a channel for a couple of years but I would guess it has to do with the deal made with CBS who appears to be the host site for kstatehd.tv streams.

Maybe captaincrap could illuminate the matter.

Why wouldn't you just use AppleTV airplay?

On second thought... Why the eff aren't you coming back for the GC reunion?!?!  Free booze, free BBQ and some sort of "gift" from the Ahearn Fund.

I heard that you don't have to worry about Ranni showing up, so no nut grabbing. (Unless that's why you're not coming... If that's the case, I'll have Gooch grab your nuts)

i think some laptops might require a separate audio cable along with the hdmi to the tv

test it out beforehand

This is very true.  Also make sure you use an HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface) cable rather than an HDmI (high-definition monomedia interface) cable.  They look practically identical, but it makes a huge difference.

I think it depends on your setup.  When I first got my 'Cast about a year ago, I had all kinds of trouble.  Since then, my internet upgraded, I bought a better router and moved it closer to my TV.  Also, I'm sure the 'Cast has updated a few times.  Now, it works like a dream.  It's really going to depend on your available network resources, though.  I should add that I'm talking about using it with supported apps like Netflix, Youtube, etc.  In terms of casting a chrome tab or your entire screen, that is probably a bit more unstable.  It was horrible at first, and I really haven't had a need to try it since, so I can't speak to whether or not it has improved.

it works even better if your phone is on the list of phones that support screen mirroring with the chromecast. My s5 does, and i've been able to use it to mirror the Fox Sports Go app onto the tv since the app doesn't support chromecast itself yet.

plus it's fun to play clash of clans on the big screen.

Yes, although it's more proper to say that WatchESPN has Chromecast built-in.

Think of the chromescast more as a fancy wireless cable that connects your phone (or tablet) to your TV. Yes, I said a wireless cable.

But not really. The supported apps (Netflix, Youtube, WatchESPN, etc) actually bypass your device. It streams directly from the server to the Chromecast via your WiFi router. That's why the supported apps work so well.

I never knew that, but makes total sense.  A few weeks ago, I fired up a Cats basketball game on the chromecast from my phone. ended up having to run an errand at halftime, and when I came back, the game was still playing, despite my phone leaving with me.
