children can be (usually are) complete assholes to dogs.  really young children don't even realize they are being assholes to the dogs.  it's a miracle of selection that more dogs don't bite the crap out of children that deserve to have the crap bitten out of them.

in all honesty this was kind of the case w/ me. The dog was in front of the door I was trying to go through. I think I said "if you don't move, I'll kill you" being two years old and all and then it attacked me. I don't think I touched it or anything though. Looking back, I think it thought "kill" was maybe a command?

Regardless, I was scared as crap of dogs until I was about 10 years old.

I do not know the entire life history for every dog owned by every person I have ever known so I can't be sure, but I think I know some who I have no knowledge of them running off.

i don't mean handle in the sense of that particular instant.  i mean the person screwed up by getting a dog they weren't able to, didn't want to, or were too lazy or stubborn to train.  but plenty of other people could have.

I got attacked by a black Lab ( ! - such a friendly breed) when I was in 3rd grade.  About lost my eye, took stitches on my face and arm.  Owner offered to let me watch him off the dog on a dirt road outside of town, I turned him down.  He paid for my ER visit, never saw that dog again.  I still have the scars.
