What can the SEC do to improve its defense?
« on: August 29, 2014, 08:39:30 AM »
obviously based on what we saw last night and how it just picked up where they left it last year (+100 points in the conf champ game) they are in a sad state of affairs. is it an athlete problem? as a whole the conference recruits on the same level as the more elite conferences, big XII, pac-12, etc. but watching their defense i couldn't differentiate their teams between the MAC. or maybe it's coaching? either way something needs to change because i am huge college football fan and hate what i saw last night, which was basically a pick up game. i guess that's what happens when you're a k-state fan and watch top 10 defenses consistently.

I think it is a problem with talent.  The Southeast area high schools used to produce elite defensive linemen, but the kids became aware of this and took it for granted.  Now they are tricking these poor colleges into paying them large sums of money thinking they are the best of the best.  Tragedy

It's clearly coaching. The SEC is filled with old, crappy coaches who have no idea how to handle any offense that wasn't around in Bear Bryant's time.

Go back to playing shitty offense
I once blew clove smoke in a guy's face that cut in front of me in the line to KJ's.

It's talent, their defenses are too slow.

It's clearly a combination of poor talent and shitty coaching.  It's pretty sad that the former bottom dwellers of the Big 12 are now consistent contenders for the SEC championship. Speaks volumes about the level of play in that conference.

Stu Mandel and I were talking last night about how Sumlin and Gus Malzahn are the new Spurriers. Their offenses are just way ahead of the defenses right now. Everyone who talks about the SEC being a defensive league forgets all about the 1990's when Spurrier came into a boring, staid offensive era and just changed everything. Malzahn and Sumlin are doing that right now.

Apparently they can't play special teams defense either.

Recruiting budgets are solidly focused on the offensive side of the ball.  If you're a highschooler that can play D in the South, you go straight to the pros.

 :dubious:

Far be it for an $EC fan (sock?) to know the rules about age/yrs out of HS as they pertain to the NFL...

SEC reminds me of the WAC in the 90's... I remember when all the other college football was over staying up and watching BYU / Hawaii etc. in SEC / arena football style shoot outs.

:dubious: indeed  I know the rules, and I know that most SEC defensive players don't even finish high school, therefore have found a loophole to go straight to the pros!
