6 Sigma Katz
« on: August 21, 2014, 01:45:00 PM »
So, tomorrow I will be attending a Lean 6 Sigma training session at work.  Anyone else on here versed in the world of 6 Sigma?  I believe blackbelt is the preferred terminology for this and there are other belt colors too but not 100% sure.  Is it actually useful/helpful?  Can I impress the ladies and write my own paycheck going forward?

Thanks in advance

There was a band here in Wichita comprised of a bunch of aircraft dorks call Six Stigma. But back to your original question :flush:

unless you work in, like, manufacturing or something in which case I think it could have some value.

They broke up and now the lead singer is in a band named Livy High.

Also, Six Sigma is like just use common sense and don't be an idiot.

lean six sigma is more about efficiencies of manual tasks and stuff. it's probably great in a field where that happens and a bunch of people work on a physical product like it was designed for. it's when people think it solves all problems and try to implement it into a field it doesn't translate to when things get mumped up.

When I took Six Sigma training the great example they used of a success story was at this station a mechanic puts in some rivets...then a few stations later another mechanic has to take out those rivets. So their awesome Six Sigma Lean Kanzen event fixed that problem by moving the rivet install to later.

wow, look how efficient that chipotle assembly line is! that would translate well to managing a hedge fund. the burrito is the money you guys, we can use that. all employee 5 day trip to chipotle corporate headquarters this fall and BAM! I'm a black belt.

Hmmm well definitely not in a manufacturing environment but perhaps this could touch on some quality and efficiency issues. (Like every workplace has, duh.)

they're called pain points and you need to remember what you learned at chipotle in order to fix them.

Suggest working four 10hour days.   Also suggest eliminating middle management.

I'm a lean/six sigma black belt.  I think it's pretty great, but I'm in manufacturing/operations management. The problem if you're not in manufacturing and you have a consultant doing this stuff they'll still geek out over the six sigma/stats stuff while constantly saying Jack Welch/GE.  The lean stuff is still pretty good for service stuff where there's an actual process with inputs/outputs.
I got a guy on the other line about some white walls

Hamburgler (obviously) knows what he's talking about, it can be used in areas outside of manufacturing, but it's not some kind of silver bullet/fix all
