who today?

I enjoy both the Netherlands and Mexico, so this game will be fun.

Did you see the ESPN thing about that big group of crazy Dutch fans who drove this gaggle of orange painted cars, trucks and motorcycles from NYC to LA, then down past Peru and then over to Rio??? rough ridin' crazy.  Took them 80 days.

Watching a documentary on ESPN right now, on Brazilian youth soccer.  Explains why it's gonna be a long time until we are producing similar talent - if ever.

Seems to have some parallels to our youth AAU basketball culture.

Ya, and I say this with complete sincerity, the USA won't be great in soccer until poor people believe they can make money off of kids playing the sport.

It's mor important than rich people investing the sport, but that prolly essential too.  :dunno:

Yeah, this is true with most sports.  Football, basketball, baseball.  Much of our best domestic talent in these sports grew up looking for a better life.

I have been watching soccer (Leawood Parks and Rec, girls under 10) for just over three years now, so I feel like I am qualified to opine on this, but I predict that the first game today will be amazing.   However, as excited as I am for Netherlands vs Mexico, I believe that Costa Rica vs Greece will be snooze city.  Just can't get into either Costa Rica or Greece.

So we are sitting here watching the match and my wife starts asking questions

Her-"is soccer the most popular sport in the world"
Me-"probably. I mean almost everyone plays it, Cricket is very popular as well"
Her-"how can it be the most popular sport in the world if it isn't that popular in America? I don't understand how it can be so popular if USA never wins"
Me- "you cannot be serious"

Currently watching in another room, god bless her but damn
