Pitching your best pitcher in a tie game in the 9th and later against the opponent's best hitters is far from wasting him. A save isn't more valuable than keeping the game going. In the ninth he should have pitched to Donaldson leading off, and he definitely should have pitched once there were men on first and second and nobody out. You have the best reliever in baseball, and he gets to watch the highest leverage spots because some old school manager wants to keep him waiting for a save situation that may never appear.

uh, no. starting in the 9th each inning you're out there is a potential season ending moment. to "save" your best player until you have a lead is horrible logic. yeah if you get the lead you STILL have to get 3 more outs, but you have to survive another inning first.

I mean, Britton is pretty much the consensus best reliever in the entire game. He's your best weapon. Its an elimination game! I know Ned waited until we got the lead in NYC to bring in Wade, BUT that wasn't an elimination game for us, AND he should've used him before Hoch. I mean, Wade was pitching the most low leverage moment of the entire series at the end. If you're the Orioles, there's no reason you can't have a 3 or 4 run 12th or 13th, then those last 3 outs aren't as big as the ones where you are facing elimination.

I said he should have used him. My argument was simply that I understand why he didn't use him in the 9th, and it turned out not pitching him in the 9th was the right decision. I feel pretty much exactly how the authors of those two fangraphs articles feel. There was definitive logic on how Buck used the pen in the ninth and the tenth, kinda, O'day was questionable. The longer he went and the worst the pitcher used made it more inexcusable.

Freaking out about him not coming in the ninth doesn't make sense because it's kind of arbitrary. Why not freak out when he didn't come in after Tillman was lifted or at any point in the 6th, 7th, or 8th? If he brought Britton in for a perfect 7th and 8th and the Orioles won in the 10th we'd still have dorky seamheads playing the result.
